Kristen Kirby won a first-set tiebreaker and then the No. 1 singles match over Kara Hinton, ranked 41
st nationally, due to a retirement to claim the Mavericks' lone team point in a 6-1 women's tennis loss to the nation's 12
th-ranked Azusa Pacific University Cougars on Saturday afternoon here at the Munson and Bavougian Tennis Courts.
The Mavericks fell to 3-10 on the season while the Cougars improved to 8-4 with the team win.
Elsewhere, Maverick senior
Taylor Hershey took her No. 5 singles match against Audrey Stewart to an extended tiebreaker after the players split the opening two sets. Hershey won the second 6-1 but lost the tie-breaker, 10-6.
The Cougars won the other four matches in straight sets after sweeping the three doubles matches. Kriby and Beckley were close in their match, falling 6-4 to Hinton and Jacky Wagner, the nation's 19
th-ranked doubles duo.
CMU continues a 4-match trip in California on Sunday facing Holy Names in a neutral-site encounter in Fresno.
