TUCSON, Ariz.— The No. 21 Colorado Mesa University softball team improved to 6-1 on the season as they dominated Saint Martin's (Wash.) 11-0 in five innings before defeating Biola (Calif.) 6-3 to open up a 5-game weekend trip at the Cactus Classic with two wins.
The Mavericks combined for 18 hits in the two games and held their opponents to just seven while
Kimbri Herring and
Paige Adair both had solid pitching performances in the Lincoln Park circle to earn the wins.
Saint Martin's Game
The Mavericks scored three runs in the bottom of the first, five more in the third and three in the fourth to implement the mercy-rule victory and their second shutout of the young season. Eight different Mavericks combined for 10 hits as
Kaila Jacobi and
Jordyn Hays each went 2-for-2 with two RBIs.
Meanwhile, Herring, now 3-0 on the year, needed just 57 pitches to get through four innings. She gave up just one hit in that time before freshman
Shea Mauser closed the game out while giving up just one more hit to the Saints, who fell to 3-2 after claiming a 4-3 win over Fort Lewis earlier in the afternoon.
After giving up her only hit with one out in the top of the first, Herring then got some early run support as
Brooke Doumer singled before stealing second and moving to third on an
AnnMarie Torres sacrifice. She and
Kellie Mrofcza, who had drawn a walk after Doumer's steal, then both scored on a 2-run Jacobi single.
Hays would then plate Jacobi with another RBI single later in the inning.
In the third, Mrofcza and Torres drew 1-out walks before Jacobi's second hit of the night loaded the bases.
Pinch-hitter
Tayah Gerber then hit a 2-run double to trigger the big inning, which was also aided by an error and a passed ball, which put the Mavericks up 8-0 through three innings.
They then added three more runs in the fourth thanks to a RBI double by Hays, a run-scoring groundout by freshman
Nicole Christensen off the bench and a
Hailey Hinson RBI single.
In addition to their 10 hits, the Mavericks also drew six walks and left just five runners on base as they went 8-for-15 as a team with runners on base.
Biola Game
Against the Eagles (3-3), the Mavericks also got out to an early 4-0 lead through 2 ½ innings and led 6-1 through six before two late runs made the final score a bit tighter.
Adair, who improved to 2-1, allowed just five hits and two earned runs in the complete game effort. She also had four strikeouts and handed out just one walk.
She had plenty of runs to work with as the Mavericks scored twice in the top of the first as both Mrofcza and Torres were hit by pitches from the delivery of Eagle starter Paige Austin (0-2). The Mavericks scored their opening run on a throwing error after a stolen base by Torres and got another when Hays hit an infield single to plate Torres.
The Mavs also manufactured a run in the top of the second as
Sarah Staudle led off the inning with a single before scoring two plays later on a Hinson double.
In the third, the Mavs drew yet another hit by pitch and a walk before another Eagle error, one of three they had on the night, helped extend the inning which, resulted in an
Ashley Bradford RBI single.
The Eagles would get one run back in the bottom of the third to close to within 4-1 but watched the Mavericks score twice in the top of the sixth to help put the game away. Hinson led that inning off with a double and scored on an Mrofcza RBI single before Hays delivered a RBI single to bring Mrofcza home later in the frame.
Mrofcza and Hays, who was 4-for-6 with four RBIs throughout the night, each went 2-for-3 while Hinson was 2-for-4.
The Mavericks had eight hits and took six free passes in the game.
The Mavericks will play two more games on Saturday taking on Simon Fraser out of Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada at 12:30 p.m. before facing St. Mary's (Texas) in a key NCAA Division II South Central Regional contest at 3 p.m.
