GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa wrestling team heads out to day for four duals in the Cornhusker State beginning on Thursday. The Mavericks will take on Chadron State tomorrow evening in Rushville, Neb., home of Chadron State head coach Brett Hunter, before heading East to Kearney for the Midwest Duals on Saturday where they will take on three ranked opponents.
MOUNTING INJURIES
The Mavericks have suffered a rash of injuries to begin the New Year with most occurring on the trip to California.
Tyler Johnson (125) and
Benny Pachello (141) each suffered injuries on the trip and are expected back in the coming weeks.
Nationally ranked
Payton Tawater also suffered an injury with no timetable for his return at this point.
EARLY SUCCESS
Colorado Mesa has routinely put out a lineup that features five freshmen at times, like the one that is projected this week. Redshirt freshman
Nolan Krone has experienced the most success from that group as he is now 18-6 on the year and has placed in the top three at a pair of tournaments. The Pomona High School product will have a chance on Saturday to atone for one of his losses on the year when he squares off with Central Oklahoma's Heath Gray at the Midwest Duals.
Krone has a career record, that includes his redshirt season, of 37-13.
WHAT'S NEXT
The Mavericks will be off until their dual on January 31 against Adams State in the front end of a back-to-back home dual weekend.
