RMAC Champs!

Jacobi homers twice as Mavericks sweep CSU-Pueblo to clinch title

PUEBLO, Colo.— Junior Kaila Jacobi hit home runs in each game of the doubleheader as the Colorado Mesa University Mavericks clinched their third straight and fourth Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Softball Championship in the last five years with 10-4 and 9-3 road wins over CSU-Pueblo on Saturday afternoon here at the Rawlings Complex.

The nation's third-ranked Mavericks came from behind in both games, outscoring the ThunderWolves 14-0 in the fourth through seventh innings combined while raising their record to 41-3 overall and to 31-3 in RMAC play heading into Sunday's regular-season finales at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.

CSU-Pueblo fell to 15-34 overall and to 13-25 in the RMAC, just behind Chadron State (12-23 RMAC) for the eighth and final spot in next week's RMAC Tournament, which the Mavericks will host beginning Thursday (May 3).

Further details of that 8-team, 3-day, double-elimination affair will be announced Monday.

The Mavericks had actually clinched the RMAC title mid-way through Game 2 when second place Colorado Christian (28-7 RMAC) dropped the second game of a doubleheader at the Colorado School of Mines (21-17 RMAC), which combined with CMU's first game win, assured the Mavericks of the crown.

The Mavericks also broke a RMAC record as they hit three doubles in each game raising their national-leading team total to 116 this season, a mark that is four better than Mines' former mark of 112, set in 2009.

Game 1

The Mavericks needed little time to score the opening run as Maggie Manwarren walked, moved to second on an Alexandria Dufour ground out and to third on a wild pitch before scoring on a Brooke Hodgson sacrifice fly.

However, the ThunderWolves came back with four runs in the bottom of the third thanks to a 2-run Gabby Moreno double and 2-run Marissa Piatt homer.

CSU-Pueblo's momentum would be short lived as AnnMarie Torres belted a triple down the right field line to lead off the top of the fourth before Kellie Mrofcza singled in her in to cut the ThunderWolves lead to 4-2.  Abby Toller then made it a 4-3 game later in the inning as she drove in pinch-runner Alexa Samuels with a RBI single to left.

The Mavericks then added another run in the fifth to tie the game when Hailey Hinson led off with a double before eventually scoring on a passed ball.

Jacobi then started the sixth with her homer to center, the sixth of her season, to give the Mavericks the lead just one batter before Mrofcza doubled to right setting up Zoe Pakes to deliver what would be an insurance RBI.

Meanwhile, McKenzie Surface shook off the rough third inning while allowing just one hit in the next three innings before five consecutive Mavericks cranked out hits in a 4-run, 6-hit frame that extended the Mavericks' lead to six.

Surface (20-1) then allowed just one hit in the seventh as she closed out what was her 20th win of the campaign.

The Mavericks out-hit the Pack 13-7 in the game as Mrofcza went 3-for-4 while Torres, Jacobi, Toller and Pakes combined for seven hits and seven RBI.

Game 2

The ThunderWolves struck quickly scoring two runs in the bottom of the first while Hannah Anderson retired the first six Mavericks she faced.

However, CMU again put up a 4-run inning as Toller singled before moving to second on a 1-out Hinson walk followed by a Manwarren single that loaded the bases.

Dufour then reached on an RBI fielder's choice that kept the bases loaded before Hodgson delivered a huge 3-run double to clear the bases and give the Mavericks a 4-2 lead after 2 ½ innings.

Michaela Burpee then pulled one run back for CSU-Pueblo with a leadoff homer to begin the bottom of the third before a 1-out Toller double and 2-out RBI single by Manwarren doubled the Maverick lead to two (5-3).

Jacobi then hit her second home run of the day, a 2-run shot to center, in the fifth while Torres and Mrofcza delivered RBI singles in the sixth to complete the scoring.

Kimbri Herring (17-1) was strong in the circle as she went the distance, spreading out seven hits and three runs while striking out six.  Manwarren went 3-for-4 while Toller went 2-for-2 as part of a balanced 11-hit Maverick offensive attack.
