Mavericks set RMAC runs record in series sweep

CMU heads into RMAC Tournament 43-3

PUEBLO, Colo. —  A day after clinching the regular season championship and setting the conference record for team doubles in a season, the Colorado Mesa University softball team can now claim to having the most prolific offense in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference history.

The No. 3 (NFCA Division II Poll) Mavericks showed it on Sunday recording four multiple-run innings en-route to a 16-6 first game win before coming through in the clutch of the second game to win 4-3 in nine innings to complete a doubleheader and weekend series sweep of host CSU-Pueblo.

With the wins, the Mavericks improved to 43-3 overall and to 33-3 in RMAC play heading into the RMAC Tournament, which they will host at the CMU Softball Stadium starting Thursday.

CSU-Pueblo fell to 15-36 and just missed out on the RMAC Tournament, finishing ninth in the conference standings at 13-27.  Had they won the final game, the ThunderWolves would have edged Chadron State, which split a Sunday doubleheader with Fort Lewis, for the eighth and final qualification spot.

The top-seeded Mavericks will open the RMAC Tournament against the Eagles (14-32, 12-24 RMAC) after completing the regular season 16-0 in true away games and 26-0 away from home.

On Sunday, the Mavericks scored six runs in the seventh inning of the first game and broke the RMAC record for the most runs in a single season on a 3-run home run from Bailey Kleespies, who touched the plate with what was CMU's 453rd run of the season.

The Mavericks also scored two runs in the first, five in the third and three in the fifth while surpassing the former mark of 452, set by MSU-Denver during a 53-6, 59-game 2010 season that saw the Roadrunners advance to Division II Women's College World Series.

The Mavericks needed just 45 games to beat that total and now have scored 457 runs in their 46 games.

They put up 39 in the series sweep, their seventh RMAC series sweep in nine weekends.

Meanwhile, in the night-cap, Brooke Hodgson delivered a 1-out triple in the top of the ninth before scoring what ended up being the winning run on an AnnMarie Torres RBI groundout.  McKenzie Surface then retired the ThunderWolves in order to close out her 21st win of the year after the ThunderWolves scored their only three runs of the game in a seventh-inning rally to force the Mavericks to an extra-inning game for just the second time this year.

In the opener, the Mavericks combined for 17 hits, including six for extra bases as Kleespies and Lexie Comer both hit home runs.

Comer's 2-run blast, her second of the season, came in the 3-run fifth and put the Mavericks up 9-3 at the time.  They added another unearned run later in the inning and then received RBI doubles from Kellie Mrofcza, Hodgson and Kaila Jacobi moments before Kleespies' hit her third home run of the campaign to punctuate the win and set the record.

Seven different Maverick hitters had multiple hits in the game, including Abby Toller who went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI.  Torres and Mrofcza, hitting in the No. 2 spot for the first time all year, also played impressive games as both went 2-for-3.  Torres had three RBIs as well.

Brooke Hodgson also scored three runs and drove in two more during a 2-for-5 effort.  She also got the win after throwing 3 1/3 innings of relief without allowing an earned run.  Hodgson allowed just three hits and struck out four.  Kimbri Herring started the game allowed just one earned run in 3 2/3 innings of work while striking out two.

Torres would add another RBI in the first inning of the second game as she drove in Maggie Manwarren with a zero-out, bases loaded single up the middle.  Manwarren had lead off the game with an infield single and then stole her RMAC-leading 42nd base before moving to third on a Hodgson single after Mrofcza had walked.

The ThunderWolves would get out of the jam without any further damage but could not tie the game as they stranded a runner in each of the first three innings before going down 1-2-3 in the fourth.

The Mavericks also stranded runners in three straight innings but broke through for two runs in the fifth to increase the lead to 3-0.  Mrofcza walked to begin the rally before Hodgson brought her home with her 24th double and 87th RBI of the year.  Hodgson then scored moments later on a ThunderWolf error.

After allowing just four hits in the first six innings, Surface was touched a bit in the bottom of the seventh as the ThunderWolves recorded five hits in the bottom of the seventh while tying the game on a bases-loaded sacrifice bunt.

Going to extra innings for the first time since a 4-3, 8-inning win over St. Mary's (Texas) on Feb. 4, the Mavericks had a chance to score in the eighth as Alexandria Dufour reached on an error before moving to second on a Kleespies sacrifice.  However, she was thrown out at third after a Hailey Hinson single as the Pack got out of the inning unscathed.

The Pack managed to draw a 1-out walk in the bottom of the eighth but could not score the winning run, which proved costly.

The Mavericks tallied 11 hits in the second game but left 10 runners on base.  Hodgson went 3-for-5 to raise her season batting average to a RMAC-best .512.  She also had four doubles, seven runs scored and seven RBIs in the series and continues to pace the conference in all of those categories while getting closer to the RMAC single-season records in each.

Torres also had seven RBIs in the series and hit .500 overall (7-14).
