LAS VEGAS, N.M. – The Colorado Mesa wrestling team won the final five matches of the dual in a 23-18 win over New Mexico Highlands on Friday evening in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference dual.
The Mavericks won only one of the first five matches and that came at 125 pounds as
Frank Martinez earned a 4-1 decision to give the Mavericks the early lead.
Colorado Mesa would drop the next four matches including a forfeit at 157 pounds and fell behind 18-3 in the dual.
They wouldn't drop another match.
Jason Buhr earned a pin at 165 pounds followed by a technical fall at 174 pounds by
Bruno Nicoletti to cut into the Cowboy lead in the dual.
Redshirt freshman
Donnie Negus earned the spot start at 184 pounds and picked up a 6-4 decision.
TJ Lodermeier had the match of the night at 197 pounds. Trailing by six with roughly 10 second to go in the bout, Lodermeier took his opponent down to his back and sent the match to overtime where he secured a takedown for the win.
Clayton Voytilla iced the bout at 285 pounds with a 7-2 victory.
The Mavericks will close out the regular season tomorrow afternoon with a dual against Adams State, beginning at Noon.
