GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa wrestling team travelled to Gunnison for a dual with RMAC rival No. 15 Western State prior to this weekend's RMAC Championships. The Mountaineers came away with a 26-12 victory after winning six of the ten bouts.
Western State won the first three bouts with two coming by major decision, taking a 11- lead.
At 149 pounds,
John Daniel earned an overtime win over Diego Calderon, 6-4. The sophomore gave up a reversal late in the third period sending the match to overtime at 4-4. Daniel earned a takedown roughly 30 seconds into the overtime period.
In the next bout, fourth-ranked
Payton Tawater picked up an 11-8 win over Shawn Beiriger. Tawater led 10-2 after the first period but after no scoring in the third period Beiriger cut it close with two takedowns and a penalty point.
The Mavericks made it three bouts in a row with a win at 165 pounds. Junior
Jason Buhr, wrestling for the first time since November, secured a 8-2 win over Ryan Pellow. After a scoreless first period, Buhr earned a pair of takedowns in the second period and a takedown in the third.
The final win of the night for the Mavericks came at heavyweight where
Clayton Voytilla scored an 8-3 win over Sam DeSeiere.
Colorado Mesa will compete at the RMAC Championships at the Olympic Training Center on Saturday.
