McKenzie Surface struck out a season-high 12 batters to lead the No. 19 Colorado Mesa University softball team to a doubleheader sweep of Black Hills State Friday (April 7).
The Mavericks won the first game 7-1 with Surface allowing just one run on seven hits for her 17
th win of the season.
Kaila Jacobi led the Mavs offensively batting 4-for-4 with two RBIs.
Mesa plated two runs in the first inning thanks to back-to-back doubles by
AnnMarie Torres and
Brooke Hodgson and a single to right field by
Kaila Jacobi.
Baylee Boren extended the CMU lead to 5-0 with a three-run double up the middle.
The fourth inning featured a run from both teams, and the Mavericks added one more in the sixth for a 7-1 win.
The Mavericks dominated from the beginning to win game two 14-0.
Mesa scored seven runs in the first inning on three hits and four walks.
Abby Toller hit a grand slam for one of the three hits in the inning.
The offensive production carried over to the second with the Mavs scoring four runs on three singles and a double.
Brooke Hodgson hit a two-run homer to highlight a three-run third inning for the Mavericks.
Kimbri Herring improved to 9-0 on the year with five strikeouts and four hits in the complete game shutout.
Colorado Mesa had 14 different players record an at-bat in the game.
Colorado Mesa (30-4, 23-2) and Black Hills State (5-25, 3-19) will close out the series with a doubleheader Saturday (April 8).
