USAF ACADEMY, Colo.— The Colorado Mesa University men's and women's swimming and diving teams dominated their Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference opponents in run-away victories at the Air Force Duals, contested Saturday at the Falcons' Cadet Natatorium.
Â
The CMU women bested CSU-Pueblo, 201-37, and Colorado Mines, 191-46, while the Maverick men scored a 184-56 victory over Colorado Mines. NCAA Division I Air Force did record a 152-89 win over CMU's women and a 150-91 win over the Maverick men but the scores were much closer than a fortnight ago when the Falcons came to CMU's Intermountain Shootout.
Â
"This was overall a great meet for us," Maverick head coach
Geoff Hanson said, noting that they defeated their RMAC competitors in all but two of the 26 total events.
Â
The Maverick women finished better than their RMAC rivals in all but one event and were led by overall victories by
Sierra Forbord in the 200-yard freestyle and
Danielle Jefferies in the 100 breaststroke. Forbord, a true freshman, clocked a time of 1:55.73, which with altitude conversions was just over a half second off the NCAA qualifying "B" cut. Meanwhile, Jefferies, a LIU Brooklyn transfer, finished her victory in 1:07.60.
Â
On the men's side, the Mavericks also claimed two overall victories as
Sam Bryant won the 500 freestyle in 4:54.16 before
Morgan Bean,
Chris Radomski,
Cody Klaiber and
Saif Ezzat Sayed won the meet-capping 200 free relay in 1:26.34.
Â
CMU teams also took 14 second place finishes behind Air Force winners and had a dozen more third place finishes.
Â
After both of the Maverick "A" 200 medley relay teams took third,
Maddie McClain (10:57.17) and
Isabelle Hansson (11:07.58) took second and third, respectively in the women's 1000 free.Â
Maddie Pressler then finished third in the 200 free (1:59.41) while
Kennedy Bright took second in the 200 IM (2:12.40).
Â
Noel Scott (55.11) and
Megan Sirijariyavat (55.49) then took second and third place finishes in the 100 free. McClain (5:22.50) and
Grace Payton (5:23.62) would do the same in the 500 free before Forbord, Scott, Bright and McClain teamed to take second in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:38.10.
Â
The Maverick men had eight runner-up finishes, starting with
Torsten Rau in the 1000 free (10:15.68).Â
Sky Hirsch was second in both the 50 (21.71) and 100 (48.10) free, starting and ending a stretch of five straight runner-up finishes in the swimming events. The others were from Bryant in the 200 IM (1:59.13), Bean in the 100 butterfly (51.51) and
Eric Berg in the 100 back (54.02).
Â
The Maverick divers also fared well, collecting five total top-3 finishes.Â
Sage D'Ambrosia finished second in both the 1-meter (260.55) and 3-meter (281.35) men's competitions while
Noah Macomber took third in the 3-meter (279.85) before finishing fourth on the 1-meter (242.50).Â
Kelsey Vreeman was second in the women's 3-meter (235.40) and third on the 1-meter board (216.75).
Â
The Maverick women have two RMAC away duals next weekend facing Adams State on Friday afternoon in Alamosa and Western State Colorado on Saturday morning in Gunnison. Because neither of those opponents sponsor men's programs, the Maverick men will concentrate on training for more than a month before returning to action fÂor the A3 Invitational in CMU's El Pomar Natatorium, slated for Nov. 30-Dec. 2.
