Complete Game Notes vs. Midwestern State and Texas Woman'sSEASON OPENERSColorado Mesa opens its season against Midwestern State in the FLC Soccer Classic in Durango. This is the second straight season the Mavericks open up with Midwestern State. They fell last season to the Mustangs at Walker Field 1-0.
The Mavericks are 10-5-3 all-time in season openers and are 3-2-1 in their last six openers.
VETERAN LEADERSHIPThe Mavericks are projected to start three seniors in the opener. They are
Julia Kranstover in the midfield,
Emma Thompson in the defense and Sarah Schentzler in goal.
Kranstover comes into the season with one goal and one assist in her career. She received her first dose of significant time last season.
Thompson has played in 33 games in her career and scored a goal during the 2012 season.
Schnetzler has been a mainstay in net for CMU since her freshman season. She has played in 52 games in her career and has pitched 13 shutouts.
FAST FORWARDSWhile the Mavericks graduated four players that accounted for 43 percent of their goals scored last season, they do have a couple of big weapons returning. Sophomore
Isa Revelle and junior
Darion Wiegert are slated to start at the two forward spots.Â
Revelle is coming off her freshman year where she scored two goals and started in 11 games while Wiegert suffered a season-ending injury during the training sessions leading up to the season. Darion has scored three goals in her career.
NEWCOMERColorado Mesa will start one true newcomer this weekend in junior
Jessie Parra. Parra comes to the Mavericks after spending the last two seasons playing for the Rattlers of Otero Junior College.
SOPHOMORE DEFENSESophomores
Taylor Bruno and
Lauryn Lee will be tasked with filling the void left by departed seniors
Sam Burneo and
Lauren Brouse. Bruno played in all 18 games last season, registering an assist while Lee played sparingly, appearing in eight games and assisted on one goal.
FIRST TIMERHead coach
Jason Clare will be coaching his first collegiate game as a head coach on Thursday. Clare spent last season as an assistant coach for Colorado Mesa and spent two years prior to that at Dodge City CC in Kansas. Prior to his time in the US, Jason coached the Yeovil Town Club and at the Center for Excellence, a development academy in England.
SIZING UP THE COMPETITIONThe Mavericks will take on a pair of schools from the Lone Star Conference this weekend in Midwestern State and Texas Woman's. Both are expected to compete for spots in the Lone Star Conference tournament with Midwestern State picked to win it all.
Colorado Mesa is a part of the NCAA South Central Region which includes the RMAC, Lone Star and Heartland Conference's. A pair of wins could vault the Mavericks into contention for one of the postseason spots at the end of the season.
RMAC PRESEASON POLLColorado Mesa was picked to finish ninth in the RMAC Preseason Coaches Poll and didnt place anyone on the preseason team. Colorado Mines was picked to win the league while Metro State was second.
NEXT UPThe Mavericks will head down to Dallas, Texas to face the Dallas Baptist Patriots and the Angelo State Rambelles in NCAA South Central Region action. They will play Dallas Baptist on Thursday and Angelo State on Saturday.
