SEATTLE, Wash.- Playing their first game in Pacific Northwest, the Colorado Mesa University women's soccer team secured their first win of the season 1-0 against Western Oregon.
The Mavs got off to a great start with Mari Ige putting up the first shot of the match just 39 seconds in but it sailed right of the post. The pressure would continue to mount on the Wolves' defense as Ellie Duncan and Parker Mairs both had opportunities to score, but their shots were blocked.
After a few more chances, the Mavs got their first shot on goal from Jenelle Arenibas but her shot fell into the hands of the goalkeeper.
The Mavs got more opportunities on goal from Katie Lozano-Monjaraz, Angelina Kazinec and Vanessa Pirrello, but all were saved by the Wolves' goalkeeper.
After some back and forth, the first half ended scoreless. However, the start of the second half saw the scoreline change right away.
Just 49 seconds into the second half, Mairs was able to score the first goal of the season for the Mavs. The Wolves attempted a response but it would dealt with by Keely Wieczorek.
The Mavs would push for a second goal as Duncan, Mairs and Shelby Lyon all had shots that missed the crossbar. Mairs had another opportunity to score in the 67th minute but it would be saved by the goalkeeper.
The Mavs defense held strong the rest of the way as they came out victorious.
The Mavs dominated on both ends, outshooting the Wolves 18-2. Mairs would lead the team in shots with six and score the only goal of the game while Arenibas would pick up her first assist. Wieczorek play all 90 minutes and made only one save as the defense made her day very easy.
After a day of rest, the Mavs are back at it on Sept. 12 against Seattle Pacific at Interbay Stadium. Kickoff is set for 12 p.m.
