SEATTLE, Wash.- Wrapping up their Pacific Northwest trip, the Colorado Mesa University women's soccer team defeated Seattle Pacific by a score of 2-0. The Mavericks finish out their road trip undefeated as they head back to Grand Junction.
The start of the match saw plenty of action as both teams fired off shots within the first three minutes. The first shot on goal for the Mavs came when Angelina Kazinec got a shot off that was saved by the goalkeeper.
A few minutes later, Kazinec would have another go at goal that was once again dealt with by the keeper. Ellie Duncan would get a shot off just 34 seconds later, but it sailed over the goal. The Falcons would get their first opportunity on goal three minutes later, but it would be saved by Keely Wieczorek.
Both teams would continue to be aggressive as they traded shots and fouls, but the offensive pressure eventually paid off for the Mavs. 23 minutes into the contest, Duncan would put the Mavs on the board with her first goal of the season.
The Mavs got plenty of opportunities for a second with shots by Vanessa Pirrello, Savanah Miller and Sarah Dunn all coming up short. Wieczorek remained busy as she made two more crucial saves to keep the Falcons scoreless at halftime.
The second half would start off slow as both teams tried to find their footing. Olivia Bariao-Arce would generate the first shot of the half, but it would miss the left of the post.
The Mavs offense would continue to put the Falcons under duress, and it eventually came to fruition once again for the Mavs. In the 54th minute, the Mavs would get their second goal from Parker Mairs, who scored a great goal after an assist from Duncan.
The Falcons would try to get one back, but it was handled by Wieczorek. The Mavs continued to be on the offensive as Duncan, Mairs, Pirrello and Coral Turner all had shots that came up empty before the game drew to a close.
The Mavs outshot the Falcons 14-8 as the Mavs defense limited the Falcons to just two shots in the second half. Mairs and Duncan would lead the team in shots with three and score both goals for the Mavs. Duncan, Mari Ige and Ella Speerschneider all registered an assist as well. Wieczorek totaled five saves on the day.
The Mavs head back on the road once again to kickoff off RMAC play against Colorado Christian on Sept. 18. Kickoff is set for 10 a.m. inside Trailblazer Stadium.
