GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- Wrapping up their Texas trip, the Colorado Mesa University women's soccer team fell short against Texas Woman's University 2-0. The Pioneers remain unbeaten at 4-0-0 while the Mavericks stumble to 0-0-2.
Coming into this match, the Pioneers were looking to continue their winning streak while the Mavs were looking for their first win on the season. The Pioneers knocked the Mavs out of the postseason last year so the Mavs were looking to get some revenge.
The Mavs started out well as
Mari Ige got the first shot of the match less than two minutes into the game but it sailed left of the goal. The Pioneers got their first look on goal just before the 17th minute but it was saved by
Keely Wieczorek.
Katelyn Romano got a great chance on goal in the 22nd minute but it was stopped by the Pioneers goalkeeper. The Pioneers responded just four minutes later with a shot of their own but Wieczorek was there to save it once again. The Pioneers got two more shots on goal before halftime but both were dealt with by Wieczorek.
The second half started off with both teams getting chances at goal. The Pioneers had their shot miss the crossbar just six minutes into the half and
Jenelle Arenibas would have a go just four minutes later but it came up empty. After a couple more shots, the Pioneers would put one past Wieczorek to give them the lead.
The Mavs tried to respond with a few shots from Arenibas and
Katie Lozano-Monjaraz but they also came up short.
Ellie Duncan tried to score an equalizer in the dying minutes but she missed.
The Pioneers barely outshot the Mavs 9-8 but had more chances on goal with six. Arenibas led the team in shots with three and Romano put up the lone shot on goal. Wieczorek made five saves on the day, the third-most saves she has made in a single game.
The Mavs travel to Pacific Northwest to take on Western Oregon. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. at Interbay Stadium in Seattle, Wash.
