WICHITA FALLS, Texas- In their first game of the 2026 season, the Colorado Mesa University women's soccer team fell to Midwestern State 2-0 at Stang Park. The Mustangs now move to 3-0-0 on the season while the Mavs start off the season 0-1-0.
The first half saw Midwestern State on the attack from the opening kickoff as they generated two shots in the opening five minutes of play.
Parker Mairs would have an opportunity to put the Mavs in the scoring column in the 14th minute but it did not come to fruition.
Shelby Lyon generated a great chance four minutes later but it was thwarted away by the Mustangs' goalkeeper. The Mustangs targeted goal a couple more times before the first half concluded 0-0.
The second half saw little action until just before the hour mark when
Coral Turner had a shot on goal that was once again saved by the goalkeeper. After some back and forth, the Mustangs opened the scoring 67 minutes into the contest. The Mavs immediately responded with a shot from
Jenelle Arenibas but it sailed over the top of the crossbar.
The Mustangs scored again to make it 2-0 after
Keely Wieczorek would make a save only for the ball to end up back with the Mustangs and eventually in the back of the net. The Mustangs would fire up three more shots that came up short but would walk away with the victory.
The Mavs were outshot 16-6 while both teams committed 11 fouls. Arenibas led in the team in shots with two while the goalkeeper tandem of Wieczorek and
Brynnlee Williams combined for four saves.
The Mavs will look to bounce back in their next match as they travel to Denton, Texas to take on 18th ranked Texas Woman's University on Sept. 5. Kickoff is set for 11 a.m. CDT (10 a.m. Mountain) inside Pioneer Soccer Park.
