Jordan Lyden of Colorado Mesa University came up short in his quest to repeat as the ITA South Central Regional Singles Champion Sunday (Sept. 28). Lyden lost to Kyle Davis of Midwestern State 6-4, 6-3, in the semifinals.
Lyden advanced to the quarter finals with wins over Thomas Rice of Texas-Permian Basin (6-4, 6-1), Freddy Sanchez of Newman (6-3, 6-2) and Chris Norrie of MSU Denver (6-3, 6-3). He needed three sets to advance past Philipp Raickovic of St. Mary's before Raickovic retired in the third set (6-3, 6-8, 4-3 ret.).
Lyden and teammate Spencer Weinbert made a strong run in doubles play as well. The duo defeated a team from Newman 8-0 and then a feisty St. Edwards pair 9-7. Lyden and Weinburg then posted an 8-2 win over conference rivals Tristan Da Lio and Omar Lopez of Western New Mexico. CMU would bow out in the semifinals with an 8-2 loss to Kyle
Davidson and Zack Santagate of Midwestern.
Andres Garcia-Rojas defeated Marcelo Chapparro of CSU-Pueblo 6-2, 6-2 in the first round and Justin Pena of Texas-Permian Basin (4-6, 6-4, 6-1) in the second. His tournament came to an end in the third round with a 6-3, 6-3 loss to Adam Dockery of St. Mary's.
Kristyn Wykert and
Rachel McLaughlin lost their opening doubles match to Gabriella Jacobson and Ellie Stevens of Tarleton State 8-3. The duo would win its next two match on the backdraw before falling to the St. Edwards team of Rafaela Haegele and Ivana Zecevic 8-4.
Wykert also win her opening singles match defeating Bianca Tijerina of Dallas Baptist 6-0, 5-7, 6-3. She would fall to Zecevic of St. Ed's 8-4 in the second round.
Natalie Martin won her first match 6-3, 6-2 over Brooke Trevithick of CSU-Pueblo 6-3, 6-2, before falling to Mariana Rong of St. Mary's 6-1, 6-0.
CMU will close out the fall season with four matches at home Oct. 2-4.Â
