COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.— The Colorado Mesa University men's tennis team dropped a 4-3 heart-breaker to Colorado College as the Mavericks were unable to complete a season sweep of the Tigers, who beat the Mavs for the first time since 2009.
The Mavericks held a late 3-2 lead in the dual but fell to 6-13 on the season as the Tigers' Sam Lessard came from a set down to win the decisive No. 5 singles match, 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-6).
CMU had swept a Feb. 28 home doubleheader with tight 4-3 and 5-2 wins over the Tigers, now 6-6 this season, but could not duplicate the result on Saturday here at Life Time Fitness.
The Mavs played from behind as the Tigers won at No. 2 and 3 doubles to seize the doubles point.
The two teams then split the first two completed singles matches before
Diogo Manzano and
William Leschig put the Mavs ahead for the first time with their No. 2 and 4 singles victories.
However, the Tigers answered back at No. 6 singles as all attention turned to No. 5, where Lessard was able to get past CMU's
Gavin Hutter, playing in his home city.
Leschig went 2-0 on the day as he and
Henry Scheck salvaged a 7-6 (7-4) No. 1 doubles win before Leschig cruised past Ross Cockrell at No. 4 singles by a 6-0, 6-3 margin.
Earlier, fellow CMU senior
Emil Hultman won at No. 3 singles, 6-3, 6-3 over Sam Dilworth to level the dual at one before CC's Dominik Kaminski won a 6-2, 6-4 decision over Scheck in the top flight.
Manzano then leveled the dual at 2-2, with his 6-4, 6-4 win over the Tigers' Lenny Lehmitz at No. 2 singles before Leschig's win gave the Mavs the lead.
The Mavericks will now prepare for their final three matches of the season in Hawai'i, where they will play next Saturday, Sunday and Monday (Apr. 4-6).
