GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – A crowd of just over 200 fans saw the Colorado Mesa University Mavericks fall on a second half goal by the Midwestern State Mustangs as they fell 1-0 at Walker Field.
"They (Midwestern State) are a very good team. They adjusted to the altitude well, they were very fit, and were strong on the ball in the air" Coach Erin Sharpe said.
Midwestern State's Kensli Pounds scored the lone goal of the match when she dribbled in and around Maverick goalkeeper
Sarah Schnetzler and snuck the ball inside the far post. Schnetzler came out to cut the angle down but couldn't poke the ball away from Pounds.
Colorado Mesa's best chance to score may have come late in the first half. With 15:34 left in the half,
Sarah Pope took a shot that made it over the Mustang's Kallie Essary but hit the crossbar. The carom of the ball went right to freshman
Monica Carlos. Carlos took the next shot but Essary was able to make the save.
Midwestern State outshot the Mavericks in the contest 12-11. "We need to be much more selfish in the attacking third considering the number of opportunities, services into the backs, and counter attacks" added Sharpe.
The Mavericks fell to 0-1 on the season but will have the opportunity to even their record on Sunday when they take on the Texas A&M-Commerce Lions at 3:00pm from Walker Field. Sunday will also be Colorado Mesa's annual 'Pink on the Pitch' match with proceeds from the game benefitting the Swing for Life Foundation for Breast Cancer Research.
