Box Score Mesa State defeated York College (Neb) 82-73 at the Al Kaly Classic in Pueblo, Saturday evening to improve to 2-0 on the year.
Colton Burgon's game high 22 points, seven rebounds and two blocked shots earned the sophomore transfer Most Valuable Player honors. Burgon finished 6-of-10 from the floor and 10-of-13 from the foul line.
Kalonji Paschal finished with 14 points, going 5-for-5 from the field. Paschal pulled down five rebounds and handed out three assists.
Michael Bear, named to the All-Tournament Team, finished with 11 points and five rebounds. Lance Fite added nine points and five rebounds.
MSC held a 31-26 halftime lead and a 21-11 rebound edge in the first half. The Mavs never trailed in the second half and led by as many as 12 points with 7:32 remaining in regulation. York pulled to within five points with 1:20 left on back-to-back baskets; including a 3-pointer by All-Tournament Team selection, Corey Standerfer. MSC hit 4-of-6 free throws with under 59 seconds remaining and a Paschal layup with seven seconds left sealed the victory.
MSC shot 49.1 percent (26-53) from the field and hit 30-of-44 free throws. MSC's scored 40 points in the paint and the bench combined for 52 points.
York shot 42.1 percent (24-57) from the field, including 9-of-25 from the 3-point line. The Panthers were 16-of-26 from the foul line. York was led by Standerfer's 21 points
MSC will return to Brownson Arena for its home opener when they host the Clarion Inn Thanksgiving Classic. The Mavs will play Texas-Permian Basin Friday night. Saturday MSC will host Dixie State. Both games are scheduled to tip-off at 7 p.m.
