Mesa State men's basketball team improved to 2-0 with an 82-56 win over Southwestern Assemblies of God Saturday night at the Colorado Mines Oredigger Classic in Golden.
Michael Bear led the Mavericks with 19 points and seven rebounds off the bench. Bear was 7 for 11 from the floor and 5 for 5 from the foul line in 23 minutes of action.
Jase Herl finished with 18 points and a team high nine rebounds and five assists. Herl was 5 for 6 from the field and 8 of 10 from the free throw line.
Mike Dominguez finished with 17 points, four assists and two rebounds. Dominguez shot 50 percent from the floor and 6 for 6 from the foul line. Dominguez leads the team averaging 19 points per game and is a perfect 12 for 12 from the foul line.
Sean Flohr recorded 12 points off the bench hitting 2 of 3 from the 3-point line.
MSC led 37-31 at halftime and opened up the game quickly in the second half going on a 17-3 run for a 20 point lead with just under 12 minutes remaining in regulation. The Mavs 26 point victory was the largest lead in the game. MSC held a double digit lead for good following a made lay-up by Herl at 17:53.
MSC shot 54.9 percent (28-51) in the game and held Southwestern Assemblies of God to a 25.9 second half shooting percentage (7-27). Southwestern's James Ford led all players with 22 points.
MSC will open at home this Friday and Saturday as they host the Clarion Inn Thanksgiving Classic at Brownson Arena. MSC will play Central Methodist Friday at 7 p.m. and RMAC foe Metro State Saturday night at 7 p.m. CSU-Pueblo is the fourth team in the field. Metro and CSU-P will play Friday at 5 p.m. Saturday CSU-P and Central Methodist will tip-off at 5 p.m.
