GLENDORA, Calif.— Colorado Mesa University seniors Henry Scheck and William Leschig posted a pair of dominating 8-0 doubles wins to highlight the Mavs' first day efforts at the ITA West Regional Championships, which got underway here at Citrus College and nearby Azusa Pacific University in Azusa on Thursday.
 
Scheck and Leschig advanced to Friday's quarterfinal round with their wins over pairs from Azusa Pacific and Point Loma Nazarene as the Mavs' four doubles pairs went a combined 3-1 in the first round and 4-3 on the day.
 
Diogo Manzano and Emil Hultman also won their first round match over Menlo's Henry Riccioni-Brown and Erkin Tootoonchi Moghadam (Menlo), by an 8-4 margin but were stopped in the Round of 16 by top-seeded Mathys Pinoit and Soren Grandke in a match decided by the same scoreline.
 
Jamison Pfingston and Romain Payan also won their opening match over Arjun Sivakumar and Antoine De Cooman of Westmont, 8-6, but lost in the second round.
 
In singles play the Mavericks went a combined 4-4 in the opening round before all four victorious Mavericks fell in the second round.
 
Meanwhile, three of the four Mavericks who dropped their opening round matches won in the first round of the consolation draw to move on to Friday.
 
Scheck, seeded seventh, won 7-5, 7-5 in the first round over Menlo's Duarte Brito but was defeated by Azusa Pacific's David James Brownlee in the second.
 
Hultman, Pfingston and Manzano were all victorious in their first round matches as well.  Manzano also won the first set of his second round matchup against Biola's Jan Vallejo, but was eventually downed, 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-3).
 
Leschig, Luke Burriesci and Payan all won their consolation matches while Gavin Hutter lost his, according to CMU Coach Dan MacDonald.
 
Action will move to La Mirada and Biola University for the rest of the tournament, which will resume on Friday at 8 a.m. PDT (9 a.m. Mountain) with the quarterfinals of the doubles draw.
