LA MIRADA, Calif.— Jade Brilhante,
Devyn Rodriguez and two Colorado Mesa University doubles teams all went 2-0 to highlight a strong opening day of ITA West Regional action for the Maverick women's tennis team here at the Biola University Tennis Center and at nearby Whittier College on Friday.
The Maverick women combined for a 4-1 doubles record and a 6-5 mark in singles as all six CMU women at the tournament are still alive in one of the main draws heading into Friday's portion of the 3-day tournament, which will resume at 8 a.m. PDT (9 a.m. Mountain).
The first two rounds of the doubles draws were played in the morning as the CMU duos of
Catalina Ballon and
Delia Maier and
Sophie Hartman and
Valentina Gonzalez were able to go 2-0 while reaching Friday's quarterfinals.
Ballon and Maier thumped Fresno Pacific's Malia Mitchell and Jasmine Palomera, 8-1 in the opening round and then got past Alessia Radu and Kailee Mazzeo of Biola by an 8-6 score in the second.
Meanwhile, the all-freshman duo of Hartman and Gonzalez improved to 8-0 this fall as they beat Menlo's Nia Macay and Ombeline Robilliart by an 8-1 score before squeaking past Azusa Pacific's Tia Kaukenas and Mariana Reveles Arreola by an 8-6 margin in the tiebreaker of the Round of 16 match-up
Brilhante and Rodirugez were downed by the same margin in their opening round of the doubles draw but bounced back in singles matches, which were played throughout the afternoon and into the evening hours.
Rodriguez won both of her matches in match tiebreakers, coming from behind to defeat Westmont's Lauren Gee, 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-8) in the first round before getting past Stanislaus State's Emma Yu in a 7-6 (7-0), 3-6, 1-0 (10-6) thriller to reach the Round of 16.
