Mavs co-lead conference with four Brechler Awards

CMU squads recognized for having highest team GPAs

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.— A league co-leading four Colorado Mesa University teams were recognized with Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Brechler Awards, which were announced by the conference on Thursday.

The Maverick men's golf, men's swimming & diving, men's outdoor track & field and men's wrestling squads were all recognized as the top performing academic team in their sport throughout the conference.

CMU and Regis co-led the RMAC with four honors.

The Maverick men's outdoor track & field team, coached by Travis Floeck, is a first-time winner and recorded a 3.544 grade point average.

The men's wrestling team, coached by Mike Mendoza, recorded a 3.525 GPA and is receiving the award for the second straight and third time in the last four years.

The Mickey Wender coached Maverick men's swimming and diving team, which won a seventh straight RMAC title in the pool, posted a 3.474 GPA throughout the year.  This is their second award and their first since 2015-16.

The men's golf team is receiving the award for the fourth time and for the first time since winning three straight awards from 2015-18.  Coach Scott Sullivan's squad recorded a 3.417 team GPA.

Established in 2012-13, the Brechler Awards recognize the conference's top team GPA in each of its 22 sports. Grades were used from the 2024-25 academic year. All student-athletes who were on the institution's NCAA eligibility list were included in the teams' GPA calculation. The team GPA is calculated by dividing the total quality points for each semester by the total number of credits. Team GPAs were submitted to the RMAC Office by each institution's compliance administrator.

The award is named after Paul W. Brechler, a former RMAC Commissioner (1976-1990), who, along with his wife Wanda, were the first inductees into the RMAC Hall of Fame. Paul was also the former athletic director of the University of Iowa and served as Commissioner of the Western Athletic Conference (WAC).

The Brechler Award winners will be recognized during the 2025 RMAC Hall of Fame & Awards Banquet on Thursday, July 10, at the Colorado Springs Marriott. Doors will open at 5 p.m. MT, and the induction and awards ceremony will follow promptly at 6 p.m. Tickets are available at RMACSports.org/Tickets.
