Colorado Mesa University Athletic Director Joan McDermott Embarking on New Chapter

(September 15, 2025) — Colorado Mesa University announced Monday the departure of Athletic Director Joan McDermott, thanking her for her service as she enters a new season of life.

McDermott will continue to serve student-athletes by offering her experience in advisory roles to colleges and universities. She looks forward to enjoying CMU athletics as a fan in the future.

"I have absolutely loved supporting the coaches and athletes of CMU over the past few years, and I'm so proud of the work we've done together," McDermott said. "Leading an athletics department of more than 1,000 student-athletes and 30+ programs have been incredibly challenging and rewarding. At this time of my life, it's time I find a better balance between the work I love in college athletics, and spending time with kids and grandkids. I expect to continue pursuing my passion working in college athletics, but likely in a consulting or more part-time capacity that will allow me a better balance in my life. I look forward to continuing to cheer on our coaches and players from the stands alongside this great community of supporters I've grown to love."

University President John Marshall praised McDermott's tenure.

"Joan McDermott is one of the most passionate and competitive athletics leaders I've ever worked with and I'm grateful for her leadership over the past few years," Marshall said.

CMU Senior Vice President of Development and Foundation CEO Robin Brown will serve as interim athletic director. Brown brings strong strategic and organizational skills, as well as a passion for CMU and its athletics program, to the role.

Marshall also offered an enthusiastic endorsement of Brown and her forthcoming tenure as interim athletic director.

"Robin brings strong strategic and organizational skills, along with a deep passion for CMU athletics, to this role. I have full confidence in her ability to guide us moving forward. We will also begin to gather feedback from coaches and the community as we think about next steps in searching for a permanent replacement as Athletic Director."
