BOULDER CITY, Nev.— Baptiste Laborde,
Timmy Cavarno and
Dylan Everett all carded 5-under par rounds of 67 as the Colorado Mesa University men's golf team moved up two places to finish third at the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships, which wrapped up on Tuesday here at the Boulder Creek Golf Course.
The Mavs finished the third and final round with a 14-under par team score of 274, their third best round of the entire season, and passed both Fort Lewis and the Colorado School of Mines, who finished a shot behind the Mavs in the 54-hole 3-day tournament.
CMU finished at a season-best 846 (-18) while the Skyhawks and Orediggers slid back to finish at 847 (-17). The Skyhawks posted a team score of 282 (-6) on Tuesday while the Orediggers struggled to a 9-over par 297 after going a combined 26 shots under par on the first two days.
The Orediggers were 22 shots ahead of the Mavs while Skyhawks were seven shots up entering the third round.
Defending national champion and national rankings No. 1 Colorado Christian won the tournament wire-to-wire, extending the final margin of victory to 24 shots with a 54-hole team score of 814 (-50) and had the best round of the day on Tuesday, posting a 271 (-17). The Cougars had four of the top six individual finishers, including Sangha Park, who finished at 17-under par 215 to claim individual honors by three shots over teammate and fellow South Korean Sungyeop Cho.
Park posted a course and RMAC Championship record of 62 in Monday's second round.
CSU Pueblo finished second in the team standings at 838 (-26) and matched the Mavs on Tuesday as Thomas Craig tied for third in the individual standings at 206 (-10).
Laborde made seven birdies and just two bogeys in the final round, carding three consecutive birdies on holes No. 14-16 as he finished in a tie for seventh place overall at 209 (-7). He moved up five spots in the final individual standings throughout the day and recorded his first career top-10 finish with what was his best career tournament by seven full shots.
Cavarno and Everett also moved up seven spots and tied with each other and with one Mines golfer for 15
th at 213 (-3).
Everett's round was the best of his season and matched his career-best. He made five birdies, including three straight and four out of five holes on the front-9.
Luke Wagstaff rounded out the Mavs' Tuesday team score with a 73 (+1) and finished in a 21
st place tie overall with a 54-hole total of 217 (+1)
Cole Beyer finished 24
th at 219 (+3) and posted a 74 (+2) on Tuesday.
The Mavericks were ranked fifth in the latest NCAA Division II South Central Regional Rankings and expect to receive the call for what would be their seventh consecutive regional tournament appearance on Friday.
The South Central/West Regional Championships will then be played May 8-10 at Victoria Club in Riverside, California. Six of the 20 teams at that event will advance to the NCAA Division II National Championships to be played May 19-23 at PGA National Resort in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.
