BOULDER CITY, Nev. – The Colorado Mesa women's golf team is in the hunt for the team title after the first round of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championship at Boulder Creek Golf Course on Sunday (Apr. 20) afternoon.
The Mavericks shot a first round 9-over, 297 and sit in fourth place. The 297 makes it back-to-back rounds of that score which is the Mavericks season low for team score. Colorado Christian and Westminster are in a tie at 3-over, 291 in the team title race with No. 35 ranked CSU Pueblo two strokes back at 5-over, 293.
Senior
Brittlynn O'Dell had the best round of any Maverick this season as she shot an opening round even-par, 72 to finish the day in a tie for sixth. The Grand Junction native is tied with three Colorado Christian Cougars for that slot on the leaderboard.
O'Dell had an evan four birdies and four bogeys on the round. She opened the round with a bogey on No. 3 then had back-to-back birdies on No. 5 and No. 6 to take her score to 1-under after her first nine holes. She bogeyed two of her first three holes on the back nine before ending the streak with a birdie on No. 13 to go back to even.
O'Dell birdied No. 16 to go back to 1-under but then bogeyed No. 17 to finish at even par.
She bested her previous season-high of 73 which she shot three times at the CSU Pueblo Fall Invitational, HPU Sharks Shootout, and the Maverick Challenge.
Freshman
Hunter Gledhill finished her first round of the RMAC Championships with a 2-over, 74 and a tie for 11
th place on the individual leaderboard. Gledhill had three birdies against five bogeys and played each side of the course to 1-over.
Payton Panzeri finished as the Mavericks No. 3 golfer with a 3-over, 75. Panzeri was at 1-under in her round heading into hole No. 16 but she bogeyed and then doubled to finish at 3-over.
Cassidy Phelan shot a 4-over, 76 to round out the Maverick scorers.
The par-3, 142-yard, No. 17 hole proved to be kryptonite for the Mavericks as each player shot bogey or worse on the hole
Westminster's Ashley Lam has the individual medalist lead after firing an impressive 4-under, 68. Lam, the reigning RMAC women's golfer of the week, won the Maverick Challenge at The Golf Club at Redlands Mesa in Grand Junction last week.
Similar to their male counterparts, the Mavericks will occupy the morning tee times in Tuesday's second round of the championship. They will begin at 10:00am PDT in their first time and at 10:36am in their final pairing.
