GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa women's golf team was on a mission from the outset in today's (Apr. 13) final round of the Maverick Challenge at The Golf Club at Redlands Mesa.
The Mavericks shot a season-best 9-over, 297 and finished with a 29-over, 605 to claim the team title and best second place Westminster by five strokes. The Griffins came into the day with an eight-stroke lead but that had evaporated with roughly six holes left to play in the round.
The Griffins finished with a 34-over, 610 which was 12 strokes better than third-place Fort Lewis who finished at 46-over, 622.
Colorado Mesa played excellent team golf as they had the No. 2, No. 3, t-No. 4, and t-No. 6 golfers as their scorers on the day. All four golfers finished in a six-stroke span on the individual leaderboard.
Senior
Cassidy Phelan was hunting for the medalist honor after being 2-under through 13 holes, but three straight bogeys ended that. She still shot a solid 1-over, 73 in the final round to finish as the runner-up. Phelan birdied No. 5, No. 10, and No. 13 before the 14-15-16 stretch played extremely difficult for her.
Junior
Payton Panzeri played excellent golf all weekend. Panzeri finished the tournament in third place after shooting a 4-over, 76 in the final round to finish three shots back of her teammate. She had two birdies in her round that came
Brittlynn O'Dell shot a final round 1-over, 73 to finish at 8-over for the tournament while
Hunter Gledhill shot 3-over, 75 to finish at 10-over for the weekend.
Westminster's Ashley Lam came into the final round as the leader and never trailed as she earned medalist honors with a 1-over, 145. She shot 2-over in the final round.
All three teams will be heading to Sin City this weekend for the RMAC Championships that will be contested at Boulder Creek beginning on Sunday April 20 with an estimated start of 10am PDT.
