OVERLAND PARK, Kan.— Freshman
Shantelle Tupaz took top individual honors as the Colorado Mesa University Mavericks had three of the top four finishers to record a team win at the C26 Hub Invitational on Saturday morning.
Tupaz clocked a time of 21 minutes, 22.5 seconds to win the championship waves by 8.3 second over Trine University's Grace Huisman. Fellow CMU freshman
Mackenzie Mayer and
Mariana Batarse Duenes were third and fourth, respectively. They turned in times of 21:31.9 and 21:34.0.
The Mavs finished with a team score of 68 points while North Central College's, the 3-time NCAA Division III Champions, were second with 56. Trine, which took third behind North Central at the national championships in the fall, took third with 28.
Team scores were compiled based on the top four finishers for each team with 20 points going to Tupaz and 19 to Huisman and so on down to one for 20
th place.
Maverick junior
Nadine Klive rounded out CMU's win with an eighth place finish in 22:42.2 behind three North Central triathletes.
Three other Mavericks were in the championship heats.
Josie Williams finished ninth with a time of 22:46.3 while
Emma Meyers was 11
th in 25:42.3.
Jaycee Stephens was officially determined to finish 12
th due to technical difficulties but was estimated to have a time around 23 minutes, according to CMU Head Coach
Jen Mathe. That time would have put her tenth in the final individual standings.
Saturday's races were held in a unique format and consisted of a 200-yard pool swim followed by a 5-mile bike leg on a virtual course inside the C26 Hub, a boutique gym. The races then finished with a 1,000-meter run outside the building.
Four total races were contested with the waves determined by the results of Friday's preliminary heats, which only consisted of the swimming and running legs. The top 12 places were determined by the two championship waves while the 13
th-20
th placers were ranked based on their times in the two consolation waves.
