LITCHFIELD PARK, Ariz. – The Colorado Mesa University Women's Golf Team completed their second-round action of the SMSU Challenge this afternoon with the Mavericks concluding their stay in Arizona at Wigwam Resort.
The Mavs finished fourth in the field today after improving one spot from their fifth-place finish yesterday in round one. In a field of 12, this is the team's first top-5 finish of the spring after having one other in the fall.
Leading the Mavs on the day was Cassidy Phelan and Payton Panzeri who both carded 76's to each finish six-over. Phelan finished the tournament at 19-over for best on the team while earning her first top 10 finish of the spring, coming in sixth individually. She jumped up nine spots in the ranking after being in 15th place after day one.
Panzeri also had a strong finish to her tournament as she ended at 26 over to place 20th in the field for her best finish of the spring yet.
Brittlynn O'Dell carded a 78 in her round to finish in 11th place of the tournament with this being her first top 15 finish of the spring.
Phelan, Panzeri and O'Dell all totaled two birdies apiece on the day to capture six of the team's seven birdies recorded in round two.
Hunter Gledhill shot an 83 in her final round for 13 over with her also having the team's final birdie. Gledhill earned a top-25 finish as well with her ending in 23rd place.
McKenzie Dolph rounded out the team shooting an 88 today to place in the top 50.
In total the Mavs shot 88 over through the two-day tournament for a final team score of 648.
Tournament winner, Saint Martin's shot a team score of 635 for just 13 strokes better. Gia Vargas of MSU Billings was the individual winner of the tournament, finishing nine over.
The Mavericks will return home now for a few days before heading South again when they take part in the Southern Colorado Open hosted by CSU Pueblo. Golf is set for March 23rd and 24th at Walking Stick Golf Course. Tee time are to be announced.
