LITCHFIELD PARK, Ariz. – The Colorado Mesa University Women's Golf Team began action this afternoon at the SMSU Challenge as they played through a rainy-filled day at Wigwam Resort.
The Mavericks who are in their second tournament of their Arizona trip, sit in fifth place after today's action with there being a total of 12 schools in the field. During the round, severe rainfall came as play had to be halted for a while before schools could finish.
As a group the Mavs shot a collective 55 over in round one with the group being led by Seniors Brittlynn O'Dell and Cassidy Phelan who each carded an 83.
The pair are tied for 15th place in the field with 76 total golfers competing in the event.
O'Dell totaled seven pars in her round with Phelan having seven as well. Phelan was also the only Maverick to record a birdie on the day, when she did so on the par four seventh hole.
Freshman Hunter Gledhill and McKenzie Dolph also scored mid 80s rounds in the weathered day as Gledhill shot a 14-over 84, while Dolph shot a 15-over 85. The pair combined for nine pars in their round. Gledill sits in 18th place as the third highest Mav on the team.
Payton Panzeri was the fifth golfer to compete for Colorado Mesa with her day totaling nine pars to lead the team.
The Mavs are currently only five strokes out of third place with MSU Denver being in fourth place by just one stroke, shooting 54-over today.
Rockhurst University currently leads the field in first place with a first round score of 33-over as a team.
Second round action will continue tomorrow for the Mavs when they finish their stay in Arizona. Tee times are to be determined.
