Horton runs to RMAC award

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.— Colorado Mesa University junior Gaby Horton has been named as the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Women's Indoor Track Athlete of the Week, it was announced by conference officials on Thursday afternoon.

The Grand Junction native and Palisade High School product extended her RMAC performance list lead to more than a half-second in the 200 meters as she posted an indoor career best time of 24.25 seconds to win that event at last Friday's RMAC Last Chance Qualifier at Western Colorado University's Mountaineer Fieldhouse.

That time lowers to 24.02 on the season-long RMAC and NCAA Division II performance lists with the track-size and altitude conversions and ranks her 13th on the national list, which will likely be good enough to qualify Horton for the Mar. 13-15 NCAA Division II Championships in Indianapolis.

Horton is the first Maverick track & field athlete to win a RMAC weekly honor this season.

The RMAC Track Athlete honor is also the first of her career.

Horton is the top seed in the 200 meters and is the second seed in the 60 meters for this weekend's RMAC Championships, which begin on Friday here at UCCS' Mountain Lion Fieldhouse.
