GUNNISON, Colo.— Teo Casados set a school-record and NCAA Division II Championship provisional qualifying time of 6.70 seconds as one of four Colorado Mesa University event winners on Saturday here during the Mountaineer Open & Multi.
The Mavericks also received wins from
Antonio Wadsworth in the men's 200 meters,
Aidan Brownell in the men's 60-meter hurdles and
Kaelea Gibson in the women's high jump while recording seven new marks on the program's all-time top 10 lists throughout the day after winning two events on Friday night.
Casados, who redshirted during last year's indoor season, before winning both the 100 and 200-meter titles at last year's RMAC Outdoor Championships, broke Elijah Williams' former record of 6.72, set on Feb. 24, 2023. The redshirt senior also went well under the NCAA provisional qualifying standard of 6.82 even with the altitude-adjustment penalty that converted his time to 6.74.
Sophomore teammate
Roman Sackman also made the final, finishing fourth in 6.91 seconds to move into sole possession of the No. 9 spot in program history after coming into the day tied for ninth.
Brownell led a 1-2-3 Maverick sweep in the hurdles, taking the win in 8.34 seconds ahead of
Trevor Kendall and
Logan Hafey, who were clocked in 8.47 and 8.48 seconds, respectively.
Wadsworth won the 200 in 22.62 seconds in what was just his second collegiate meet.
Alonzo Leiba also took fifth in 22.90.
The Mavs' 4x400-meter relay team, made up of
Justin Blanton, Brownell. Hafey and Wadsworth also took second in 3:25.18.
In the field, redshirt sophomore
Austin Schultz moved up three spots to seven in program history for the shot put, placing fifth with a throw of 14.90 meters (48 feet, 10 ½ inches).
The Maverick women also had several strong performances, including the winning high jump effort of 1.62 meters (5-3.75) from Gibson, just a centimeter off her career-best from the 2023-24 season.
The Mavericks also took four of the top five places in the long jump as
Addy Kirkpatrick took second with a jump of 5.49 meters (18-0) while
Emily Hruby was third with a career-best mark of 5.27 meters (17-3.25).
In the shot put,
Aaliyah Bos recorded her second third place finish of the meet with a mark of 11.99 meters (39-4), which moved her into the No. 9 spot of CMU history.
Augustine Hancock, who won the weight throw on Friday, finished fifth at 11.65 meters (38-2.5).
Sophomore pentathlete
Kaitlyn Pearson also had a solid day, placing third with 3,112 points. She started her day with a winning time of 8.86 second in the 60-meter hurdles, moving up to third in program history for that discipline.
Atahlia Mills also turned in a time of 9.00 seconds to take second in that portion, just off her 2024-25 season best of 8.99, and ended up seventh overall with 2,769 points.
Pearson's long jump mark of 5.40 meters (17-8.75) was also just a centimeter of her career-best while Mills had a career-best shot put mark of 7.11 meters (23-4).
The Mavs also fared well in the sprints as
Hannah Schissler took second in the 200 meters with a time of 25.27 seconds while
Kammi Merritt finished third in the 400 with a time of 57.96 seconds to move up to fifth in Maverick history Merritt also finished fourth in the 200 with a time of 25.87 seconds.
Schissler and
Sylvia Johansen also qualified for the finals in the 60 as Schissler finished fourth in 7.71 seconds while Johansen took sixth at 7.86 seconds. Schissler had posted a slightly quicker mark of 7.70 in the preliminary round to move into the No. 10 spot of program history.
Rimari Facey also took fourth in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.49 seconds.
The Mavs will take an extended holiday break before returning to competition here at the Mountaineer Field House for the Big Red Machine Open on Jan. 24.
