RENO, Nev.— A portion of the Colorado Mesa University men's wrestling team wrapped up the Mavericks' 2025 calendar year on Sunday, competing at the Reno Tournament of Champions here at the Reno Events Center.
Apollo Cruz led the Mavs with a 3-2 record while
Murphy Harris,
Christian Pebley and
Joe Trygstad all reached the quarterfinal round as the Mavs scored 34 team points to finish 13
th amongst college teams.
Cruz won his first match and two others in the consolation portion of the 141-pound bracket.
Pebley won his first and second round matches at 174 pounds by major decision. Then then dropped his quarterfinal to top-seeded and eventual champion Cael Valencia of Arizona State. Pebley went 2-2 throughout the day.
Trygstad had a similar path at 184 pounds, pinning both of his first two opponents before falling to Southern Oregon's Adrian Chavez-Morales, seeded second and ranked eighth in the NAIA, in the quarterfinal round. Trygstad also went 2-2.
Harris had a first round bye in the 133-pound bracket and took down Kyle Rice of Grand View in the round of 16 before falling in the quarterfinals.
Auston Eudaly and
Ryan Wheeler also went 2-2 for the Mavs at 157 and 165 pounds, respectively. Wheeler was competing for the first time this season.
The Mavs will begin the 2026 portion of the season on Jan. 9 at the Western Colorado Open.
