GOLDEN, Colo.— Adonias Cantu went 4-1 and placed second in the 125-pound bracket while leading seven Colorado Mesa University wrestlers to top six finishes at the Mines Rookie Open, contested Sunday here at the Colorado School of Mines' Steinhauer Fieldhouse.
Brady Samuelson also finished third at 197 pounds while the Mavs had a trio of placers in the 184-pound bracket.
Logan Noble led that group finishing fourth ahead of
Noah O'Dougherty and
Joe Trygstad.
O'Dougherty co-led the Mavericks with four total wins, matching Cantu.
AJ Hague also won his first three matches, all by fall, before medically forfeiting to fourth place at 141 pounds.
Tommy Thomas also placed fourth at 197 pounds.
Cantu won his first three matches by major decision, technical fall and pin and then claimed an 8-5 sudden victory decision over Wyoming's Isaiah Harrison in the semifinals before dropping the 125-pound final to Western Wyoming's Stockton Allen.
Samuelson won his first two matches by pin and then claimed third with a medical forfeit win.
Noble went 2-2, winning his first two matches after receiving a Round of 32 bye.
O'Dougherty also received a first round bye and advanced to the main draw quarterfinals. He then rattled off three straight wins in the consolations, pinning Trygstad in the fifth place match.
Trygstad went 3-2 and claimed three pins as well.
Thomas went 2-2 after also receiving a first round bye.
The Mavericks will open up the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference portion of their season next Sunday, wrestling at New Mexico Highlands University in Las Vegas.
