GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - The #25 Colorado Mesa University Men's Wrestling Team battled to an exciting finish this afternoon as they narrowly defeated the Grizzlies of Adams State University in a 20-18 dual victory to stay undefeated in RMAC play and move to 8-0 on the season.
In the dual the Mavs trailed by as much as 15 points after falling behind 18-3 through six matches before making their final push that scored 17 straight points to overtake the Grizzlies.
Serving as the deciding matches in the dual were the final two weight classes as the team needed big wins from both #10 Gabriel Carranza and #13 Tyler Doyle to overcome the deficit. Both ranked wrestlers would answer the call as each of them were victorious through Carranza's first period pin and Doyle's tech fall decision.
In the whole dual, the Mavs split matches as they won five and the Grizzlies won five as well. Serving as winners for CMU were Oran Huff, Gus Dalton, Tanner Baumgartner, Carranza and Doyle.
Huff earned the only win for CMU in the first six matches with his 8-3 decision over Adam Concepcion in the 133 pounds bout.
Dalton and Baumgartner would take victories in the dual as well as they were beginning of the team's comeback. In Dalton's match he narrowly defeated Dallas Porter 7-6 at 174 pounds, with Baumgartner then winning after in a 10-7 decision over Sergio Zaragoza at 184 pounds.
Trailing now 18-9, Carranza would enter to wrestle for the Mavs at 197 pounds and give them a much-needed win by pin in 2:45 over Wil Aucoin. His pin would give the team six points and now have them trailing only by three going into the final bout.
Doyle, who secured the victory for the Mavs, would then end the day with a 20-4 tech fall over Ruben Melani. Doyle secured most of his points on a handful of takedowns, before a final near fall count that gave him four points and the eventual tech fall decision.
Today's victory is the second straight time the team win has been decided by two points, and their second straight come from behind win after trailing in their victory against Chadron State as well.
Besides the pin and final tech fall decision, every match in the dual was decided by six points or less.
