GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Colorado Mesa men's lacrosse finished out the regular season with a victory over in-state rivals Colorado College, coming from behind in the second half to beat the Tigers, 17-13.
James Steinke led the way with four goals while
Hunter Holcomb had a five-point night, scoring a hat trick and breaking the CMU single-season assist record with the first of his two assists.
The Mavericks finish the season at 13-4 and defeat CC for the sixth time in eight attempts. The Mavericks also maintain their unbeaten home record under second-year head coach
Troy Moyer, finishing 7-0 at home in 2024 after going 5-0 in Grand Junction in 2023.
CMU trailed by as many as six goals in the first half and were behind by four goals at halftime but outscored the Tigers 11-3 in the second half to roar back for the win.
The Mavericks had a 23-11 advantage in the faceoff circle and had 41 ground balls compared to 25 for CC. Colorado Mesa had 62 shots compared to 27 for CC, but Tigers goalie Ben Anastos made 14 saves to keep the Mavericks at bay.
Mac Bayless and
Dom Pasquale split the game in goal for CMU. Bayless made two saves in the first half while Pasquale made four saves against three goals allowed in the second 30 minutes.
The Mavs took the lead three separate times in the first quarter. Entering the game tied for the single-season assist record with former teammate
AJ Switzer, Holcomb wasted no time breaking it by passing to
Carson Points for CMU's first goal just 1:38 into the game.
Micah Payton and
Logan Smith scored unassisted goals to give CMU a 3-2 lead.
Colorado College went on a scoring run to take control of the game in the first half. CC's leading scorer Thomas Power scored with a minute left in the first to tie the score at 3-3 before the Tigers scored six more goals in a row to take a 9-3 lead over the home team.
The Mavericks rebounded shortly before halftime, with Holcomb scoring twice and
Mike Edwards finding the net as CMU trimmed the lead slightly to 10-6 at the break. That momentum helped the Mavericks turn the tables completely in the second half.
CMU scored the first six goals after halftime, turning a 10-6 deficit into a 12-10 advantage within the first six minutes of the second half. Three of the six goals came from
James Steinke along with goals from
Philip Petersen,
Dillon Pless and
Deuce Kirschke. Steinke added another in the fourth to give CMU a 13-12 lead before Holcomb completed his hat trick and goals from
JJ Brummett,
Ethan Points and
Micah Payton.
