USAF ACADEMY, Colo.— Christina Palmer won the women's discus throw with a career-best and improved NCAA Division II Championship provisional qualifying effort of 46.76 meters (153 feet, 5 inches), just one centimeter off the week-old Colorado Mesa University program effort as she led a group of three Maverick throwers who competed at Friday's Air Force Twilight Open.
Palmer will move up slightly to as high as 23
rd on the NCAA Division II Championship performance list, pending other results from around the country.
Teammate
Heather Yackey, who broke Palmer's Maverick standard at last week's Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships, finished fifth with a throw of 42.08 meters (138-1). Yackey is currently tied for 21
st on the national list with her RMAC Championship bronze-medal winning effort of 46.77 meters (153-6) that broke Palmer's former record of 46.21 meters (151-7).
Meanwhile,
Izaak Siefken had a solid second place effort of 58.56 meters (192-1) in the men's javelin, but was just off his season-best of 58.97 meters (193-6).
Women's hammer throw school-record holder and RMAC Champion
Augustine Hancock was entered for Friday's meet but did not throw.
The Maverick women are slated to compete again on Saturday at the CSU Pueblo Last Chance Meet.
