GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— Returning all-American and school-record holder
Dawson Heide secured a likely repeat NCAA Division II Championship appearance with a decathlon win while
Katie Thomson claimed the women's heptathlon as the Maverick multi-event athletes completed action at the Maverick Invitational & Multi on Monday here at the CMU Track & Field Complex.
Heide won the decathlon with a high-ranking NCAA Championship provisional performance of 7,125 points, currently fourth highest in Division II this season, while teammates
Levi Hoenninger and
Evan Atkin joined him in the all-time Maverick top 10 for the decathlon.
Meanwhile, Thomson won the heptathlon with 3,977 points, taking the event by nearly 400 over teammate and runner-up
Hope Matteson, scores that would have been significantly higher if not for a timing error which negated the heptathletes' performances in the 200 meters on Sunday.
Heide fared best in the 4-man all-Maverick decathlon field in six of the ten different disciplines and set a new javelin throw personal-best of 57.69 meters (189-3) in Monday's portion of the event. He now leads the leads the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference performance list in the decathlon and ranks second in both the javelin and 110-meter hurdles after running to a solid time of 14.64 seconds to open up Monday's portion of the competition.
Meanwhile, Hoenninger, Atkin and
Jameson Moore all successfully completed their first decathlons to secure qualification for the RMAC Championships later this month. Hoenninger, a freshman, who placed fourth in the heptathlon at the 2024 RMAC Indoor Championships, scored 5,986 points in total to rank sixth in program history while sitting fourth on this year's RMAC performance list. He established or set career-bests in seven of the ten events, faring particularly well in the long jump on Sunday with a leap of 6.97 meters (22-10.5) to move into the No. 9 position of CMU history for that event.
Atkin, also a freshman, scored 5,671 points over the ten events and now ranks 10
th in CMU history and fifth on this year's RMAC list.
Moore, a converted thrower scored 5,239 points and ranks seventh in the RMAC. He had the top discus throw mark of 38.27 meters (125-7) on Monday.
Thomson, the RMAC's indoor pentathlon champion over the winter, had new career-best marks of 15.29 seconds and 12.45 meters (40 feet, 10 ¼ inches) in the 100-meter hurdles and shot put on Sunday and had another solid day of efforts on Monday to extend her final margin of victory while falling just 300 points shy of her personal best even with the timing error.
Matteson took second with 3,600 points and also had two new career-bests while setting a NCAA Championship provisional qualifying high jump clearance on Sunday.
Meanwhile,
Jordan Brockman (2,896) and
Sophie Lindauer (2,400) both dropped out of the 800 meter run but still recorded a legal heptathlon score to obtain likely qualification for the RMAC Championships.
As a team, the Mavs won 21 events throughout the 2-day meet and recorded 13 NCAA Championship provisional qualifying marks.
The Mavs will remain at home for the Maverick Invite #2 on Sunday, although that meet will not include the decathlon and heptathlon.
