GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Whatever head coach
Troy Moyer said at halftime to his team against Concordia University Irvine on Friday night worked.
After a tightly contested first half that saw CMU lead by just a single goal after 30 minutes, the Mavericks dominated the second half, outscoring CUI 12-0 after halftime to secure a 17-4 Senior Night win at Community Hospital Unity Field.
Philip Petersen scored four goals to lead the Mavericks while
Hunter Holcomb had a six-point night, scoring three goals and three assists to wrestle the program's all-time career assist record away from teammate
James Steinke.
JJ Brummett also had a hat trick for the Mavs.
Mac Bayless recorded the best performance of his career, tallying a career-high 15 saves and holding CUI scoreless for the final 35 minutes of the game. Bayless made nine saves in the first half and six in the second half.
The Golden Eagles scored first and eventually tied the game twice at 2-2 and 4-4 before
JJ Brummett's strike with 4:25 left in the first half gave the Mavericks a slim one-goal lead after two quarters. In the first half, CUI outshot the Mavericks 24-19 and won 9 of 11 faceoffs.
Everything changed after halftime. The Mavericks scored just 39 seconds into the second half as
Ethan Points finished off a pass from
Micah Payton to make it 6-4, CMU.
Hunter Holcomb scored a minute later with an assist from
Levi McCoy. The score remained 7-4 until the 6:09 mark of the third quarter, when Holcomb returned the favor to set up McCoy for another Maverick goal.
The assist was Holcomb's second of the game, 22
nd of the season and 77
th of his career, setting a new all-time career program record. Holcomb becomes the third different Maverick to hold the record in the last 12 months, joining former teammate
AJ Switzer and current teammate
James Steinke.
The Mavs kicked things up a notch late, as the goal featuring the record-breaking assist ended up being the first of six goals in a six-minute span to close out the third quarter for CMU. The Mavericks won the second-half faceoff battle, corralling 8 of 14 in the second half, and outshot the visitors 23-15 after halftime.
Friday also marked Senior Night for the Maverick program, and several of the 10 players honored had big moments in the victory. Aside from Petersen and Holcomb tallying Senior Night hat tricks, Bayless set a career high in saves while
Micah Payton finished with two goals and three points to continue his breakout season.
Trey Corkin III finished with six ground balls and two caused turnovers in defense while senior
David Voigt III started the first game of his collegiate career against CUI.
The Mavericks have concluded the home portion of their RMAC schedule after tonight's win. CMU still has three road RMAC regular season games to go, as they will travel to Westminster next Saturday, April 13 in a key rematch of the overtime classic in Grand Junction before playing at Adams State and CSU Pueblo on April 19 and 21. The RMAC Tournament will follow on April 26 and 27, and the Mavericks control their own destiny to host that tournament as long as they continue to win their RMAC games.
