SURPRISE, Ariz.— The Colorado Mesa University women's tennis team won two of the three doubles matches to claim the doubles point while
Delia Maier picked up a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 6 singles but those results were not enough for the Mavericks, who saw their 2023-24 season come to a close with a 4-2 loss to arch-rival MSU Denver in a consolation dual at the Pacific West Conference Tournament on Thursday evening.
The Mavericks fell to 12-16 with the defeat while MSU Denver ended the season with an 11-12 record and three wins over CMU in the month of April.
Maier went 2-0 on the day as she and
Kristen Thomas claimed a 6-3 win at No. 3 doubles over Courtenay Leonard and Monica Guarin in the first completed match. The Mavs then went on to win the doubles point as
Julianna Campos and
Devyn Rodriguez claimed a 6-4 win over Kambra Roles and Hanna Haber at No. 2 doubles.
Guarin and Maier, who won over Mikayla McKenzie, then split the first two singles matches in comfortable fashion as CMU took a 2-1 overall lead.
The remaining four singles matches were much tighter although the Roadrunners pulled event at 2-2 thanks to a 7-6 (7-2), 6-1 win from Hanna Haber over Maverick junior
Makenna Livingston at No. 2 singles.
After battling for two hours, Leonard then outlasted Campos, 7-5, 7-5 at No. 4 singles as the Roadrunners took their first overall lead of the dual at 3-2.
Meanwhile, CMU's
Issy Coman fought from 5-2 down in the second set of her top flight singles match against Emily Hafner but did not have a chance to play the decisive third set as Roles came from a set down to get by Rodriguez, 6-7 (2-7), 6-3, 6-2 in the No. 3 singles match, which closed out the dual.
Campos and Coman were playing in their final career matches as the Mavericks' two seniors.
