Mavs Defeat Adams State 20-3

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Colorado Mesa men's lacrosse won its fourth consecutive game in convincing fashion as 15 different players scored a goal in a 20-3 win over RMAC foe Adams State. The win improves CMU to 7-3 overall and 4-0 in RMAC play.

JJ Brummett, Dalton Goodale, Jack Cooper, Luke Chastain and Paden Chastain scored two goals apiece for the Mavericks while 10 other players scored once. Luke and Paden, who are twin brothers, had their twin telepathic connection working as three of the four goals that Luke and Paden combined to score were assisted on by the other brother.

Colorado Mesa held Adams State to just nine shot attempts, the fewest allowed by the Mavs in an RMAC game in program history. The Mavs had 42 shot attempts themselves and tallied 56 ground balls compared to 22 for the Grizzlies. Colorado Mesa won 23 out of 27 draws, as Cam Casados (8-8) and Kanyan Rhodes (5-5) both had perfect nights in the circle. CMU forced 27 Adams State turnovers while only committing 17.

The Mavericks scored the first six goals of the game before ASU's Dawson Balabanoff put the visitors on the board. After that, CMU scored 11 unanswered goals between 4:27 in the first quarter and 6:07 in the third quarter to take a 17-1 lead. The Mavs scored eight goals in the opening quarter and had a 14-1 lead after the first half.

Dalton Goodale scored the game's first goal just 1:10 into the game and strikes by Alex Blatt, Ethan Points and JJ Brummett soon followed as CMU's first four goals were unassisted. The rest of the first quarter featured another goal from Brummett and a goal and two assists from Hunter Holcomb. The Mavs outscored ASU 6-0 in the second quarter, as the Grizzlies only had one shot attempt in the entire 15-minute period.

Philip Petersen assisted on three of the quarter's six goals for CMU, setting up Levi McCoy, Paden Chastain and Eli Bibler. The second quarter also featured the first goals of the season for sophomore face-off man Kanyan Rhodes and Brady Porter. The Mavs scored three goals in a two-and-a-half minute span to go up 11-1 with 11 minutes remaining in the first half before Porter and Rhoades scored six seconds apart with four-and-a-half minutes to play.

The third quarter saw Luke Chastain pass to Paden for the first goal of the second half before true freshman Stefan Dingbaum assisted Jack Cooper then scored himself as CMU built a 17-1 lead. After back-to-back goals from Adams State, the Mavs scored the final three goals of the game, two of which were Chastain linkups with Paden assisting Luke for the first two goals of Luke Chastain's college career.

Defensively, Trey Corkin III finished with seven ground balls and three caused turnovers. The Mavericks used three goalies – Luke Parrish for the first half, Mac Bayless for the third quarter and Dom Pasquale for the fourth quarter – all of whom allowed one of ASU's three goals. Parrish made two saves while Pasquale made one.

Colorado Mesa will close out its four-game conference homestand with an April 5 game against Concordia Irvine at 7 p.m. next Friday night. CUI will be the first team that the Mavericks will play for the second time this season as CMU beat the Golden Eagles 19-9 in California during the first weekend of the season on February 25.
