Mavs Use Young Guns To Beat Pueblo

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Six Colorado Mesa Mavericks scored their first career goal, 13 different Mavs found the net and CMU scored 17 of the game's first 18 goals in a runaway 20-4 win over CSU Pueblo in RMAC men's lacrosse action from Community Hospital Unity Field.

The No. 17-ranked Mavericks improve to 6-3 overall and remain undefeated in the RMAC at 3-0. CSU Pueblo falls to 0-8 overall and 0-3 in conference.

Nik Moore, who entered the game with zero career goals in seven games played, led the Mavs offensively by scoring his first three career goals for his first career hat trick. Five other Mavs found the net for the first time in their collegiate careers – Ryan Garcia and Paden Chastain had two goals each while Eli Bibler, Stefan Dingbaum and Trevor Nelson found the net once.

Bibler and Hunter Holcomb had five assists apiece, both tying a single-game program record held by numerous Mavericks. The Mavs jumped out to a 7-0 lead within the first half of the first quarter, led 14-1 at halftime and led 17-1 with four minutes remaining in the third quarter. Aside from Garcia and Chastain, Logan Smith, Alex Blatt and JJ Brummett also finished with two goals.

Colorado Mesa dominated statistically, outshooting CSU Pueblo 54-21 and grabbing 49 ground balls to CSUP's 20. The Mavericks won 20 out of 28 face-off draws, as five faceoff men (Dylan Checketts, Mike Edwards, Kanyan Rhodes, Cam Casados and Tyler Kopco) took three draws or more for CMU and all five recorded a winning percentage of 67 percent or better.

The Mavericks went nearly perfect on clears (15-for-16) while CSU Pueblo was held to a 12-for-20 night on clear attempts, part of CSUP's 18 turnovers in the game. Three goalies split the game in the cage for CMU, with Luke Parrish earning the start and making one save against one goal conceded in the first half and Dom Pasquale making three saves against three goals conceded. Mac Bayless appeared in the game but didn't face any shot attempts in his four minutes of action.

Colorado Mesa struck just 32 seconds into the game when Holcomb passed to JJ Brummett for CMU's opener. Holcomb assisted on four of CMU's first five goals, setting up Blatt, Moore and Brummett again around an unassisted Micah Payton goal as the Mavs led 5-0 just five minutes in. Logan Smith scored twice near the end of the first quarter.

The Mavericks continued to put the pressure on in the second quarter, with Bibler entering the game and making an immediate impact. The redshirt freshman found Moore for his third assist of the season and first of the game to make it 11-1 Mavs with 6:10 left in the first half. Bibler then had a hand in three of CMU's next four goals, setting up Paden Chastain and Dalton Goodale for goals while scoring one himself.

Freshmen primarily played the second half, with Dingbaum and Chastain scoring early in the third quarter. Pueblo fought back, scoring one goal from nearly three quarters of the length of the field to make it 17-2 and adding another to wrap up the third quarter at 17-3. Other true freshmen who played their first games of the season included Luke Chastain, Dax Lambright, Pierson Bensinger, Koll Ford, Porter Boyce, Cameron Crisp and Kael Degenhart. Redshirt sophomore Return Meigs also made a season debut.

Trevor Nelson, a senior defender, drew the loudest ovation and reaction of the night early on in the fourth quarter. Nelson, who had appeared in 49 games with 19 career ground balls and 14 career caused turnovers, ventured into the offensive zone and scored his first career goal to make it 19-3 with 11:08 left, off of Bibler's fifth assist. The entire Maverick bench erupted and mobbed Nelson when he returned to the sideline.

The Mavericks will look to extend their three-game win streak and remain undefeated in RMAC play when they face Adams State at 11 a.m. on Saturday morning, also from Community Hospital Unity Field in Grand Junction.
