GENEVA, Ohio— After going for team points over the last five days, a contingent of Colorado Mesa University swimmers turned their attention to personal aspirations on Sunday as they competed in the Division II Long Course Invitational held here in the SPIRE Institute, site of the week's NCAA Division II National Championships.
The meet was designed for the in-form swimmers to compete in a 50-meter Olympic size pool, the world-wide standard for the sport in order to qualify for other non-NCAA swimming related meets, such as national championships or Olympic qualifiers. College swimming meets are typically contested in a 25-yard pool and times are usually not considered for such meets.
Seven different Mavericks set new LCM (long course meters) personal bests while five won races throughout the day, including
Andrew Scoggin who posted a winning time of 56.56 seconds in the 100-meter backstroke, less than a second off the U.S. Olympic Trials qualifying standard of 55.69.
Sophia Bains also set a personal best, winning the 200-meter individual medley in 2:22.64.
Freshmen
Jameson McEnaney and
Max Ayres both posted times of 23.32 seconds in the 50 freestyle, just 0.55 seconds off the Olympic Trials mark of 22.79. McEnaney's time was a new personal-best.
Ayres later set a PR time of 1:06.88 in the 100 breaststroke.
Lauren White also had a PR time of 1:04.60 in the women's 100 back after winning two national relay titles over the preceding two nights. She finished second amongst seven competitors on Sunday.
Her relay teammate
Elli Williams had a PR time of 27.28 seconds in the women's 500-meter freestyle.
Four-event national champion
Ben Sampson, already a 2-event qualifier for the U.S. Olympic Trials, competed in the 100 free and posted a personal-best time of 51.61 seconds.
Katerina Matoskova also qualified for the summer's Czech national championships, winning the 200 back in 2:21.99.
Swede
Olivia Hansson also won the 400 free in 4:29.14 while
Benedict Nagy, who won both the 200 and 400-yard individual medley during the NCAA Championships, won the 400-meter IM on Sunday in 5:01.16.
