GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— The Colorado Mesa University Mavericks won their 1,000
th and 1,001
st softball games in the Division II era (1992-Present) and extended their winning streak to seven as they took advantage of big innings in an 8-2 and 9-3 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference doubleheader sweep over visiting Adams State University on Saturday afternoon here at the CMU Softball Stadium.
The Mavericks trailed early in both games but scored seven runs in the fifth inning of Game 1 and registered five in the fourth inning of Game 2 as they defeated the Grizzlies for the 27
th and 28
th consecutive times since 2015.
CMU also improved to 17-7 overall and to 15-3 in RMAC play, good for second place in the standings. ASU has now dropped eight in a row while falling to 3-24 overall and 1-17 in the conference standings.
Game 1
The Grizzlies took 1-0 and 2-1 leads on solo home runs by Belinda Vargas and Grace Hendrickson in the second and third innings before two Grizzly errors helped the Mavericks plate seven go-ahead runs in the bottom of the fifth, which proved to be more than enough.
Mekayla Westmoreland reached on an error to begin the inning and then moved to second on a wild pitch before scoring on yet another error by ASU shortstop Mariah Madrid whose' flip throw to try to get Westmoreland at third went awry.
That tied the game at 2 and helped the Mavericks open the floodgates as
Ava Fugate singled to Madrid as CMU loaded the bases with just one out.
Ally Distler then cleared the bases with a 3-run double, which put CMU ahead 5-2. Distler the moved up to third on another wild pitch and then scored on a
Miranda Pruitt single.
Pruitt then moved to third on yet another wild pitch before
Cailynn Parsons drove her home with a triple. Westmoreland then came up for the second time in the inning and drove in Parsons with what proved to be the game's final run.
Pitcher
Preslee Christensen went the distance in the circle for the Mavs, matching a career-high with nine strikeouts. She also allowed just five hits and one walk and improved to 5-3 win the victory.
Game 2
The Mavs took the early lead when Distler and Fugate executed a double steal in a first-and-third situation in the bottom of the first.
However, the Grizzlies answered back in a big way on a 3-run home run by Caylie Eiguren in the top of the second as ASU went up, 3-1.
The Mavs were then able to tie the game in the bottom of the third thanks to some aggressive base-running, another Grizzly error and another wild pitch.
They then chalked up five runs in the fourth inning, mostly on their own accord as Arrieta put the Mavs ahead for good on an RBI single, moments before Fugate hit a 2-run double to the left field gap.
Fugate then scored on a Distler RBI groundout, which made the score 7-3.
Chloe Valdez then tripled and scored on a wild pitch to complete the inning before Arrietta hit CMU's lone home run of the day to begin the bottom of the sixth, her seventh round-tripper of the year.
Arrieta had three of the Mavs' nine hits in the second game as she and Fugate went a combined 5-for-7 with six runs scored and four RBIs from the top two spots in the CMU lineup.
Meanwhile,
Hannah Sattler earned the win in the circle, improving to 3-2 after allowing just two seventh-inning infield singles in four innings of relief of
Christa Zagala, who pitched the first three innings for the Mavs.
The two teams will play another doubleheader on Sunday, beginning at 11 a.m.
