Mavs rally, pound Grizzlies in doubleheader, series sweep

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— As they had done on Saturday, the Colorado Mesa University Mavericks came from behind in a pair of Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference softball wins over visiting Adams State University, pulling out a 5-4 Game 1 win with a seventh-inning rally before pummeling the Grizzlies, 13-3 in Game 2 of the Sunday doubleheader and series finale at the CMU Softball Stadium.

The Mavericks extended their winning streak to a season-best nine games and improved to 19-7 overall with Sunday's wins.  They also moved to within a game of the RMAC leads at 17-3 as conference-leading MSU Denver saw a 21-game winning streak snapped at CSU Pueblo as the Roadrunners were swept in a Sunday doubleheader while falling to 18-2 in RMAC play with their first two conference losses.

CMU has also now defeated ASU 30 straight times since 2015.

Game 1

The Mavs trailed 4-3 with two outs in bottom of the seventh before Ava Fugate singled up the middle while taking second on the bobble in center field.  Ally Distler was then walked intentionally before Chloe Valdez hit another shot up the middle as Fugate scored the tying run a moment before Distler scored the winning run from first as the ball once again got away from ASU center fielder Kaia Bradford.

Earlier in the game, the Mavericks scored three runs in the bottom of the second as the Mavericks benefitted from the Grizzlies' two other errors.

Mekayla Westmoreland was hit y a pitch to begin the rally stole second before moving to third on the ensuing throwing error by catcher Caylie Eiguren.  She then scored on second Grizzly error before Myah Arrieta singled Jackie Oster to second.

Fugate, who went 5-for-6 in the doubleheader and 9-for-13 (.682) with eight runs scored in the series, then doubled to plate Oster before Distler hit an RBI groundout to plate Arrieta.

However, ASU would score two unearned runs of their own in the top of the third as the Mavs committed two errors.

The Grizzlies then took a 4-3 lead on a Eiguren 2-run homer before pitcher Aubree Davis held the Mavs to just one total hit in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings and the first 2/3 of the seventh before CMU's late rally.

The Mavs managed just six hits as a team as Fugate went 3-for-4.

Hannah Sattler improved to 4-2 with the relief win, giving up just two hits in 2 1/3 innings in relief of starter Preslee Christensen.

Game 2

The Mavs would also take the early lead in the second game, scoring two first-inning runs on three hits, two wild pitches and RBI singles from Allison Lindsay and Miranda Pruitt.

However, the Grizzlies tied the in the top of the second on a Bradford 2-run double before she scored on a Belinda Vargas RBI single later in the inning.

The ASU lead would be short-lived as the Mavs went on to score ten runs in the bottom half of the inning, registering seven of their 12 hits in the inning, which saw Pruitt hit a 2-run home run while Distler had two singles for three RBIs in the frame.

Leading 12-3, the Mavs then tacked on a security run in the bottom of the fourth quarter thanks to another Grizzly error while relief pitcher Christa Zagala shut down the Grizzlies in the final three innings of the 5-inning, run-rule victory.

Four different Mavericks had 2-hit games while Zagala improved to 6-2 with the win.

The Mavs will take their winning streak to South Dakota next weekend, where they will face Black Hills State in Spearfish on Saturday and Sunday.
