HOME RUN DERBY

Mavericks blast two grand slams, seven HRs in sweep of UCCS

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Seven home runs. Two grand slams. Twenty-two hits, 12 for extra bases.

And that's just the offense.

In the pitching circle, two complete-game performances, only one walk issued, four total hits, all singles, and one run allowed.

Colorado Mesa (15-7, 13-3 RMAC) swept CU-Colorado Springs 15-1 and 12-0 in a pair of run-rule games Monday to run its winning streak to five games.

Miranda Pruitt, who hit a home run in every game of the four-game series, hit a grand slam in the second inning of Monday's opener, and Myah Arrieta cleared the bases with grand slam in the fourth inning of the series finale.

All but five of the Mavs' 27 runs in the doubleheader came across on home runs.

Game 1

Ally Distler hit a pair of three-run home runs, one in the first inning and another in the fifth, with Pruitt delivering the big blow to give CMU an 8-0 lead in the second inning. Cailynn Parsons doubled home a run in the first and Dakota DiPaola flashed her speed leading off the fifth.

She slapped a base hit up the middle and raced around the bases when the ball went between the legs of the center fielder, sliding across the plate to beat the throw. Three batters later, Distler hit her fourth home run of the series and eighth of the season for a 15-1 lead.

Distler went 3 for 3, scored three runs and drove in seven in the first game, Pruitt had four RBI in the game, going 2 for 3. All but two starters had at least one hit.

When they weren't running the bases, the Mavericks were shutting down the Mountain Lions on two hits.

Preslee Christensen gave up two singles and allowed only one unearned run. She struck out four and walked one in her first complete game of the season, retiring eight of the first nine Mountain Lion batters and faced more than four batters in only the fourth inning, when the Mountain Lions scored their only run of the day.

Christensen (4-3) threw 64 pitches, and got six groundouts and five flyouts, facing 19 batters.

Game 2

Arrieta's grand slam was her second home run of the game — she hit a two-run shot in the third to get the Mavericks' offense going. Her grand slam gave the Mavericks a 7-0 lead, and they put the game away with a five-run sixth inning. Ava Fugate hit a three-run home run and Pruitt's second home run of the day, a two-run shot, put CMU up 12-0.

The defense played flawlessly behind Christa Zagala, who threw her second complete-game shutout of the weekend and faced only two batters over the minimum. The Mountain Lions reached base only twice, on singles in the first and sixth innings. Zagala (5-2) retired 14 batters in a row between those two hits. She induced 12 flyouts and five groundouts and needed only 63 pitches.

Arrieta had six RBI, Fugate three and Pruitt two.

In the series, Pruitt hit .583, with seven hits in 12 at-bats, with five home runs, 12 RBI and 23 total bases. She drew two walks and was hit once.

Distler was right behind Pruitt with a .571 average, going 8 for 14 and 12 RBI, four home runs and 21 total bases. She also stole three bases, as did Bella Aragon and Arrieta — CMU was a perfect 10 for 10 on stolen base attempts in the series.

Chloe Valdez hit .538 with three home runs and nine RBI. As a team, CMU hit .411 in the four games, outscored UCCS 52-15 and hit 15 home runs.

Zagala had a 0.00 ERA in her 2-0 performance, with two complete game shutouts. She struck out four and allowed only five hits.
