CMU to compete in NDR, NCAA races at Clermont Draft Legal Challenge

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— The Colorado Mesa University triathlon team will compete in a pair of spring season races this weekend when they head to the Clermont Draft Legal Challenge in  Clermont, Florida.

The Mavericks will have five participants in Saturday's National Developmental Race and in Sunday's NCAA race.

Race Details

Saturday's NDR race will consist of a 750-meter swim loop, a 20-kilometer bike segment over four loops and a 5K run on two loops.  The field will be capped at 90 athletes.

It is slated to commence at 8 a.m. EST (6 a.m. Mountain).

The top three finishers will become eligible for a USA Triathlon Elite License.

Sunday's NCAA race will feature more than 70 athletes from 14 different NCAA triathlon programs.  The distances will be half as long as Saturday's race and the lap out rule will be enforced.  That race will begin at 11 a.m. EST (9 a.m. Mountain).

Who's Competing

The Maverick contingent in both races will consist of Shannon Feran, Fiona Graves, Torin Lackmann, Yoana Tohom and Josie Williams.

A look back to the fall

The Mavericks once enjoyed a strong championship season in the fall, winning their fifth straight regional crown before finishing third in the NCAA Division II standings at the Women's Collegiate Triathlon National Championships on Nov. 11 in Tempe, Arizona.

Feran led the Mavericks with a third place individual finish and was one of the Mavs' four CTCA All-Americans, honors that go to the top 21 finishers in each division.  Feran was a first team selection while Natalie Mitchell and Torin Lackmann earned second team honors.  Nadine Klive, also a member of the Mavs' track & field program, was an honorable mention pick.

Graves was also a member of the Mavericks' national meet team, placing 27th amongst the Division II finishers.

Up Next

The Mavericks will host the Maverick Relays, a community event, on Saturday, Apr. 20.  At that event, two member relay teams that will see each member complete a 200-yard swim in the El Pomar Natatorium before running a 1,000 meter course on campus.   The entry fee will be $30 per team.

Additionally, young athletes (12 and under) can sign up and will be paired with one of the Maverick varsity athletes to compete in the mixed collegiate division.  Space is limited and the cost is $15 per youth athlete.
