IRVINE, Calif. – Colorado Mesa pulled away in the second quarter and withstood some late goals by the home team to defeat Concordia University Irvine 19-9 in the first RMAC game of the season and the first-ever RMAC meeting between the two schools.
The win gives No. 16 CMU a sweep on their season-opening road trip to California to move to 2-0 on the season, and an early lead in the RMAC standings. Concordia Irvine falls to 1-2 on the season, with a win over Dominican and losses to Westminster and CMU.

Unlike in the season-opener against Dominican when the Mavs scored 11 goals in each of the opening two quarters, the Maverick offense was held in check by the Golden Eagles.
Ethan Points put the Mavs on the board off an assist from Payton six minutes into the contest but didn't score again before Drew Buckley scored for CUI to tie the score at 1-1 with 3:31 to play in the first quarter.
The Mavericks eventually found a way around the Golden Eagles defense and opened the scoring floodgates.
JJ Brummett got two goals in the opening period's final two-and-a-half minutes to give CMU a 3-1 lead after the opening quarter, and the Mavs wasted no time scoring in the second period.
Colorado Mesa outscored CUI 7-2 over the course of the second quarter, with Smith, Checketts, Blatt and Corkin III ripping off unanswered goals at the start of the period. After former Maverick and current Golden Eagle
Matt Carresi scored early in the third quarter to make it 11-4 CMU, the Mavericks went on another extended scoring run, tallying seven unanswered goals between the 5:56 mark of the third quarter and the 6:35 mark of the fourth quarter.
Concordia Irvine did have an answer late, outscoring the Mavericks 5-4 in the final period and scoring five of the final six goals of the game, all within the contest's final five minutes. Nick Beeson, who ended the scoring for CUI with a goal with 20 seconds remaining, was the only player to score twice for the Golden Eagles.
Colorado Mesa outshot the opposition 65-24, with a 39-16 edge in shots on goal. The Mavericks won 21 of 31 draws and scooped 41 ground balls compared to CUI's 20.
CMU will have a weekend off before a trip to Illinois, facing No. 18 Maryville on Friday, March 8 and Lewis on Sunday, March 10.
