Isaiah Cheeks set a new career-best 6-dive score of 332.15 points to finish sixth in the men's 1-meter while freshman teammate
David Roethlisberger tallied 277.40 points to take 13
th while narrowly missing out on the finals on Friday in Day 2 action at the Air Force Diving Invitational here in the Cadet Natatorium.
Cheeks's score came in the finals as he and the NCAA Division II Maverick contingent of four men and five women took on divers from nine other NCAA Division I programs. The redshirt senior who is already assured of a fifth straight trip to the NCAA Championship site next week, had tallied 301.65 in the prelims.
He had also finished sixth on the 3-meter springboard on Thursday.
Roethlisberger scored 277.40 points in the preliminary round, falling just a quarter point short of the top 12 finish and a spot in the final. He was also just 7.60 shy of the NCAA Division II qualifying standard of 285.00 points.
Fellow Maverick freshman
Jax Juarros finished 19
th with 254.90 points while
Dawson Wilson, competing in his first meet of the season, placed 21
st with 251.55 points.
Meanwhile, five Maverick women competed on the 3-meter springboard. Freshman
Jenna Hurley led the group, placing 16
th in the field of 38 with a score of 230.90 points.
Kenya Meyer was 21
st with 219.65 while
Talia Datilio (191.15),
Mimi Licht (181.20) and
Juli Holt (164.55) placed 30
th, 34
th and 37
th, respectively.
The CMU divers will join their swimming counterparts in hosting the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships in less than two weeks. The swimming portion of that meet will begin on Tuesday, Feb. 13 while the diving competitions will begin the following afternoon (Feb. 14).
