Mavericks sweep RMAC basketball awards

Reed Thyne, Rowland have top performances

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Colorado Mesa swept the initial RMAC women's basketball weekly honors on Tuesday after going 1-1 in the D2 Conference Challenge in Odessa, Texas.

Olivia Reed Thyne earned the eighth weekly honor of her career, but this is her first as the RMAC Offensive Player of the Week, and Mason Rowland earned her first Defensive Player of the Week award, her second career weekly award.

Reed Thyne averaged 24.5 points a game last weekend, which leads the RMAC. She scored a career-high 32 points in the season opener against West Texas A&M, an 80-78 loss. In that game, she shot 70% from the field (14 of 20) and for the weekend, made 60.6% of her attempts, adding 19 points in the win over Texas Permian Basin.

She recorded her 22nd career double-double against West Texas with 13 rebounds.

The junior forward from Windsor, whose birthday was Tuesday, has scored 960 points in her career and would be the 21st player to score 1,000 points at CMU. She's currently 24th all-time in scoring and her 659 career rebounds is 6th all-time.

Rowland, a sophomore guard from Durango, triggered the Mavericks' defense as they rallied from a 17-point deficit against the Buffs. In her first collegiate start, Rowland had six steals and one blocked shot against West Texas A&M, along with 20 points, seven rebounds and three assists.

In the 79-76 win over Texas Permian Basin, Rowland had three steals, four assists and scored 19 points. Rowland's nine steals leads the RMAC after the first week of play, and she's fourth in scoring at 19.5 points a game.

The Mavericks travel to Salt Lake City this weekend for the Westminster Invite, playing Fort Lewis on Friday and St. Edward's on Saturday.
