WAIKALOA VILLAGE, Hawaii – The Colorado Mesa women's golf team shot their best first round score of the Fall as they completed the first round of the HPU Sharks Shootout on Friday (Oct. 25) afternoon at Mauna Lani Resort Golf Club North.
The Mavericks shot a 17-over, 305 which put them in eighth place after one round of play. The 305 is their best opening round score of the fall, eight strokes better than their start at the Wasatch Invitational hosted by Westminster.
They currently sit four strokes ahead of ninth place Sonoma State and two strokes behind Western Washington who is currently in seventh place. Cal State San Marcos took the first-round lead after a round of 5-under, 283.
Senior
Cassidy Phelan leads the Mavericks after she shot an opening round of 1-over, 73 which puts her in a tie for 11
th on the individual leaderboard. Phelan opened her round with a double bogey on her first hole and a bogey on her second hole. After nine holes, she was at 4-over and quickly falling off the pace.
The Henderson, Nev. native rebounded nicely as she birdied No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 consecutively to crawl back into the top half of the leaderboard.
Payton Panzeri finished her day with a 2-over, 74 and is just one stroke behind her teammate in a tie for 18
th on the leaderboard. Panzeri played the first nine-holes of the day to 1-under but closed with three consecutive bogeys on No. 1, 2, and 3.
Brittlynn O'Dell shot an 6-over, 78 and
Hunter Gledhill carded an 8-over, 80 to round out the Maverick scorers.
Cal State San Marcos' Madison Murr leads the tournament with a 5-under, 67 in her first round.
The second and final round will tee off tomorrow morning at 11am mountain.
